Chicken Tortilla Soup and Cheeseburgers

“My husband makes the best chicken tortilla soup that’s adapted from Rick Bayless’ Sopa Azteca recipe. It’s tangy and smoky and warms me up through and through. Geoffrey will make a huge batch of soup on Monday and I will have it for dinner throughout the week – it’s that good.”

And more with Emily Schuman…

Your biggest fashion faux pas, or a regrettable style phase:

In high school, I rocked pooka shells pretty hard. I had a choker, an anklet, the whole deal. Oh, and did I mention that I wore them together?

Your current Netflix addiction:

The Mind of a Chef. It’s narrated by Anthony Bourdain and the first season follows David Chang, the chef at Momofuku. He’s hilarious and each episode focuses on a different theme, whether it’s Japan, simple foods, or noodles. I love watching it, but always have to have dinner shortly thereafter because it makes me seriously ravenous.

What do you love most about your work?

I get to write and photograph things that I’m truly passionate about and create content that reaches a large audience of like-minded people. I love that each day is different and presents its own challenges - it keeps things exciting.

One piece of advice you would give your 18 year old self:

To stop worrying. All of the things that stressed me out as an 18-year-old were painfully insignificant, ranging from an occasional bad grade, or a boy who wouldn’t call me back, to trying to have my entire life figured out.

Your most recent culinary discovery and obsession:

Ramen. The only ramen I used to know was the packaged variety I’d scarf down after swim meets. We now go to Silverlake Ramen at least once a week for their seriously rich broth with pork belly.

The pair of jeans you will never grow tired of:

My Gap boyfriend jeans. I bought them years ago and they only get better with age. All of the rips and tears are in exactly the right places and they have just the right amount of give.

Nail color currently on your hands and feet:

Essie ‘Partner in Crime.’ It’s a deep dark brown that looks good on hands and feet.

Your favorite restaurant for brunch and your go-to order:

Gjelina in Venice. Even though it’s a bit of a drive from where we currently live, my husband and I still go almost every weekend. I always get a decaf coffee, their duck confit with potato hash and a scone to finish. Plus, then you’re conveniently on Abbott Kinney, which is one of the best places to walk around and shop.

Favorite pizza topping:

Sausage with black olives (with a root beer).

Cocktail of choice:

Dirty martini with Hendrick’s Gin.
