Editor-in-Chief, Modern Farmer

09.15.15

Sarah Gray Miller is the editor-in-chief of Modern Farmer. Modern Farmer is the authoritative resource for today’s cutting-edge food producers and consumers: the farmers, wannabe farmers, chefs, and passionate home cooks who are influencing the way we eat right now. Blending hands-in-dirt service, soulful inspiration, and whip-smart reporting, Modern Farmer understands that a tomato is never just a tomato—it’s also a political, and deeply personal, statement about who we want to be and the world we hope to live in. Prior to this role, she has served as the editor-in-chief of Country Living, Budget Living, O at Home, and Organic Style. Sarah Gray currently lives in Athens, New York with her rescue dog, Mr. Chips. Check out Modern Farmer on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr for more information!

Your longest lasting friendship?

I’ve known my best friend, Jane Chase Wells, since I was two years old.

Favorite Instagram account to follow:

My dog’s of course: @hellomrchips

What do you love most about your work?

In the broad sense of my whole career, I get paid to be a nosy parker – scouting other people’s homes, gardens, and farms asking all sorts of prying questions. At Modern Farmer specifically I work with the smartest, most creative, and most collaborative group of women who passionately believe the magazine can make a difference.

One piece of advice you would give your 18 year old self:

Avoid the long-haired actor you meet at a bar in 1992. Ditto to the unemployed art photographer who shows up at your place ten years later.

Your dream dinner party guest:

Dolly Parton.

Your motto in life:

Life’s too short. In other words, just go ahead and eat the carbs, drink the whiskey, and kiss the boy. Don’t let self-consciousness keep you from the dance floor or the karaoke mix.

A secret talent we should know about:

I can sing the names of every U.S. president, in chronological order, to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson...

Which of the seven deadly sins are you guilty of:

Gluttony.

Your last takeout order:

A cheeseburger, fries, and carrot cake from Crossroads Brewery in Athens, New York.

Where does your credit card get the most use?

Right now, I’m obsessed with Tradesy.com
