Talking Top Tens: Lizzie Fortunato

Co-Founder and Designer of Lizze Fortunato

07.31.17

Twin sisters Lizzie and Kathryn Fortunato founded Lizzie Fortunato in 2008 to create unique accessories that use unexpected materials and champion handicrafts from a breadth of places and cultures. Lizzie designs the line, while Kathryn oversees sales and operations. Lizzie loves telling a story with each collection and her designs are inspired by travel, fine art, and cultural references. Her designs marry found, reclaimed and precious materials in fashion forward silhouettes, and the sisters’ brand has become synonymous with unique, ahead of the curve accessories that are influenced by fine art, travel, and artisanal craftwork. The Lizzie Fortunato collection is produced in New York by a team of skilled metalsmiths and seamstresses and extreme care goes into each piece. Lizzie Fortunato launched leather goods in 2011, and has been tapped by designers like VPL, SUNO, Matthew Williamson, Jenni Kayne, and TOME for runway collaborations. Lizzie is a member of the CFDA and the label has been featured on the pages of Vogue, British Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times. For more on Lizzie, you can follow her on Instagram, FacebookTwitter, and Pinterest

And more with Lizzie Fortunato…

What do you love most about your work:

Always getting to create and work with my hands.

Your most recent culinary discovery and obsession:

I’m recently obsessed with L’Estudio Cafe near my office in New York’s Lower East Side. I’ve been trying to plan as many breakfast meetings there as possible.

Your last great read and why you enjoyed it:

Rules of Civility. It’s actually the second time I’ve read it—it reinvigorates my love for New York City.

A secret talent we should know about:

My sister calls me Hipster Handyman. I’m surprisingly good with a power drill.

On Sunday, we’ll find you wearing:

Comfortable jeans (current favorites are a pair of MiH that I picked up at Kick Pleat). They’re high-waisted and I pair them with a J.Crew tee or Demylee loose knit sweater.

Your go-to power outfit:

A great pair of pants (I love Apiece Apart and Shaina Mote) with a tucked in shirt and the perfect blazer. My favorite is a cream colored double-breasted boyfriend blazer from The Row that my mom bought for me. She is obviously the best!

You decompress each day by:

Yoga! I go to Stellar Stretch on Fulton Street in Clinton Hill Brooklyn, where I live.

The trend you hope never goes out of style:

Statement earrings.

Nail color currently on your hands and feet:

Essie Geranium on both!

The skill or sport you’re dying to learn:

I want to learn to speak French. I’m often in Paris for work and feel silly that I’ve never learned the language.
