What to Wear to a Graduation: Start With the Dress Code

Graduation sits in this weird middle space where neither is strictly formal nor entirely casual. Most ceremonies fall somewhere in this broad range between business casual and semi-formal, which is why so many people end up overthinking their outfits. College graduations are typically a little dressier than high school graduations because they have larger venues and more upscale post-ceremony dinners, but it really depends on the specific school.

Knowing the location first is vital when putting your outfit together. When grass and stadium steps enter the chat, outdoor ceremonies can completely change your outfit plans. With indoor graduations, you won’t have to worry about sweating through layers but may want to remember to bring one in case the AC is extra cold.

The timing of the ceremony plays a role as well. Morning ceremonies can handle lighter garments that are more airy for the daytime, while evening graduations transition to darker colors or dressier silhouettes. When you can’t decide between two outfits, it never fails to go with the dressier one. If ever in doubt, it's always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

What to Wear for a Graduation Ceremony Under Your Gown

Graduation gowns can trap heat, so choose breathable fabrics like cotton poplin, cotton jersey, linen blends, bamboo, or even silk blends. Remember that the gown adds weight, so make lightweight pieces your best friend. For smooth silhouettes, I say go with silk camisoles, sleeveless blouses, relaxed jumpsuits, or simple bodysuits. These will lay flat underneath your gown and prevent bulkiness. To remain wrinkle free throughout the day, I recommend wrinkle-resistant fabrics like polyester blends, tencel blends, or knitted sets or dresses.

The second you put your gown on, everything will start to feel heavier. The moment you zip the gown up and settle into your seat, those stiff fabrics and chunky layers will let you know you made the wrong choice. That’s why I recommend wearing fabrics under your gown that move with you. I love flowy knee or midi length dresses for this reason, because they stay comfortable, photograph well, and don't bunch awkwardly under the robe.

Jumpsuits are great options too, but it's best to choose relaxed styles rather than too tight ones to avoid it feeling like a sauna under your gown. Choosing a flat-laying neckline will be your life saver. V-necks and scoop necks will sit more comfortably under the gown versus a cowl or collar. If it’s a spring or summer ceremony, I say ditch high necklines entirely, they can trap heat and feel restrictive once the gown is fully on.

What to Wear as a Guest to Graduation

If you're attending as a guest, I’d lean towards outfits that feel classy yet comfortable. Midi dresses are always an easy choice, especially for mothers attending graduations; they’re comfortable, photogenic, and work for post-graduation celebrations. I especially like tailored trousers and blouses for indoor ceremonies because they still feel comfortable without looking too casual. Quiet style works best, so keep colors neutral and accessories minimal. If you don’t want to wear a dress and want something easy, a simple jumpsuit is the perfect option. Go for the styles with tailored legs or wide legs for a clean look.

Graduations are one of those occasions where less is usually more. The people who always tend to look seamless at graduations rarely wear the loudest outfits; they wear simple pieces that fit well. I’d avoid ripped jeans, flip-flops, or partywear. As a guest, it’s best to wear an outfit that complements the moment instead of competing with it.

• Button-Down Top: A see-through button-down is a versatile piece that can work for professional settings, nights at the club, casual Saturday looks, or elevated errand outfits.

Pretty much every silhouette you could want can be made with a sheer fabric. But not all sheer fabrics are the same. From the dramatic look of tulle to the classic feel of lace, these are sheer materials to shop for:

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the ease and affordability of self tanners, however, they can be a bit tricky to remove. If you're reading this, then you might be wondering how to remove self tanner. In fact, it's actually quite simple if you know what to do, but it can sometimes be a bit time consuming depending on how long it's been on and how tan you are.

"Removal is not instantaneous in most cases. Partial fading can occur after one session, but complete removal generally takes one to three days depending on how deeply the DHA has developed and the individual’s natural skin turnover," says Dr. Jenna Queller, MD, FAAD, board certified dermatologist and founder of DermWorks.

How Long Should You Leave Your Self Tan On?

The longevity of your self tan will vary based on factors such as the application technique, product type and how long it's been on. "You’ll know it’s time when the tan starts to fade unevenly, typically around day five to seven. If you’re noticing patchiness, especially around hands, feet, or inner arms, then that’s your sign to remove and reset," says Isabel Alysa, celebrity tan artist, founder and CEO of Dolce Glow and Sunnee BaeSkin.

Additionally, Erika Vasco, beauty expert and founder of The Tan Edit, says if you notice a dull tone to the skin, then it's better to remove the self tanner and restart at that point rather than build on top of it. It's easy to convince yourself that your self-tan still looks good even if it's been over a week because it can be a hassle to reapply, however, you'll want to take an honest look at your skin to see if it's time to take it off.

How Do You Get Self Tan Off Quickly

If you want to figure out how to remove self tanner quickly, there are a few ways to do so. Keep in mind, when we say quickly, we mean in a few sessions and not instantaneously. It's worth noting that poorer-quality formulas tend to fade unevenly and much faster sometimes within two to four days, according to Mishel Chernyavskiy, celebrity spray tanner and founder of MSK Labs.

Yoga studios can feel like they have a “uniform,” especially for highly specific classes like Bikram. How does everyone seem to magically know what to wear to hot yoga classes? What Even Is Hot Yoga?

“Hot yoga” is a broad term, and with the westernization of many yoga styles, there’s no rigid definition. Here’s a quick breakdown of common hot yoga formats:

• Bikram: A rigid 90-minute format with 26 postures and two breathing exercises, usually in a room heated to 105ºF with at least 40% humidity.
• Hot Hatha: A slower, more flexible format for classes that are typically 60 minutes in a 100ºF room.
• Heated Vinyasa: A breath-to-movement style of practice that can be practiced unheated, but many enjoy these classes in a 90ºF+ room with 30%+ humidity.

Even very slow, calming classes like yin can be practiced in heated spaces, or hybrid classes like Power Sculpt. Vinyasa and Hatha can be heated or unheated; Bikram is the style that is very hot by tradition, and the one that people frequently describe as torture. I love it, but it’s not for everyone. Whichever style of hot yoga you do, these clothes are all suitable options.

Fabrics That Keep You Cool and Collected

You want performance materials that wick away moisture and won’t add to the suffocating heat in a steamy class. Cotton and full polyester are regrettable choices, but athletic polyester blends and airy fabrics like bamboo are just right. These are the best materials to shop for:
