Top 10 Ankle Jeans

Flats, Sandals, Sneakers—These Ankle Jeans Go With Them All

anthropologie, Good American Good Vintage Straight Ankle Jeans

anthropologie

Ankle jeans and their place in fashion have been a saving grace for me for years. At 5'3", many traditional jeans are a little too long, covering my stylish shoes or touching the ground and getting dirty.

Ankle-length jeans are the perfect length for me, providing a full-pant look while revealing my ankle for a slimming effect and letting me show off my cute shoes. As someone with short legs, it's incredible what the right hem length can do for my proportions.

Whether you want ankle jeans for the flattering look or so you can let everyone see your footwear, welcome to our list of the best ankle jeans. Using the Rank & Style algorithm, we found the 10 best ankle jeans for every style and body type, from dramatic wide-leg styles to classic vintage designs.

All products and deals are sourced by the Rank & Style team using data and expert insights. If you shop through our links, we may earn a commission—at no extra cost to you.

Why we love them:

Old Navy understands the height struggle when it comes to women and jeans. These come in petite, regular, and tall inseam sizes, so no matter your height, you can find a pair that actually fits. It's easy to see why these are the brand's top-selling jeans, as they have a simple but flattering straight-leg shape and a vintage look that feels casual and cool.

With a variety of washes and sizes ranging from 00-30, they're impressively versatile. These are the women's ankle jeans to get if you want to rock this silhouette, but don't know where to start. The fit is consistent across many body types, and they offer a premium look for a low price.

Feedback from our tester, Brittany Brainard, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor

“The cut of these jeans is just right for a high-waist straight jean; they’re incredibly flattering and easy to dress up or down. The fabric looks like rigid denim (the light wash I tried on definitely gave Levi’s vibes), but has just enough stretch that they’re still super comfortable. I’m 5’7”, and the regular length hem hit about an inch above my ankle bone which was perfect.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Why we love them:

Old Navy also snags the second spot on our list of best ankle jeans, and this pair is just as versatile and affordable. Rather than the straight-leg shape, these have a barrel silhouette, flaring out around the thighs and knees and subtly tapering back in around the ankles. They offer a more relaxed look, and are one of my favorite styles for days when you don't want to feel restricted by tight pants.

You can amp up your denim style with the unique colors and designs, like the floral printed wash or the two-tone look. I'm also a lover of the chunky seams on either side of the legs, which give them more depth and texture.

Feedback from our tester, Brittany Brainard, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor

“These are great summer barrel jeans—the denim isn’t too heavy and the ankle version gives a cropped look that pairs nicely with sandals. The denim has a stiffer feel, which emphasizes the barrel shape. Keep in mind, full-length barrels are meant to hit at the ankle, so when you get the ankle version they’re going to hit well above that. On my 5’7” frame these hit about 3-4” above my ankle bone.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Why we love them:

People can't say enough good things about Old Navy denim. As someone who grew up during the low-rise-jean era, I'm all about high-waisted pants now, especially on bloated days. These also have a slimmer shape, and the top of the pants sits higher on your waist, falling right around your belly button.

Made with Old Navy's Wow fabric, they have more stretch than other ankle jean styles, but also have a durable build that can withstand wear after wear without stretching out or losing their shape. As a bonus, the fabric is made from recycled cotton and uses less water to produce. A true standout feature is the available maternity sizes, which can be hard to find at most stores.

Why we love them:

As much as I love a trend, these ankle jeans transcend the micro trends with their enduring silhouette. Gloria Vanderbilt's Amanda fit has been a beloved silhouette for decades. No fuss, no muss, just good-fitting jeans. Constructed with high-quality cotton and just a hint of spandex, they have a classic jean feel with a bit of extra stretch to keep you comfortable.

The pants combine an array of flattering elements to make you feel confident: a moderately high waist, a straight-leg shape, and a soft, stretchy fabric. This is the kind of jean that has a loyal cult following and is a gateway to loving denim. The price is shockingly low for the impeccable quality and longevity you get.

Why we love them:

These are my favorite high-rise ankle jeans, and when I say high-waisted, I mean it. These fall above my belly button, perfect for crop top days. You get a whopping 14 inches of high-rise, landing at your true waist, creating an hourglass figure (whether you have one naturally or not).

Despite my seemingly inconvenient height, they always land well above my ankle, without looking like capris. It makes my short legs look longer, and gives that laidback feel with a raw hem. Levi's tend to run a little pricier, but these best-selling jeans are often on sale, and if they aren't, we always have Levi's coupons for you.

Why we love them:

Tummy control panels might be one of the best modern fashion inventions. The Lift Tuck® Technology has you covered with a criss-cross sculpting design. These are also exceptional ankle jeans for petite figures. The petite sizes aren't just shorter; they're specifically constructed for smaller, shorter figures, from the waist to the ankle.

For me, these are the definition of an everyday jean. They're the kind of denim pants that you reach for when you want to look as good as you feel. There are no funky washes or distressed styles, no fancy seams or unique hems. Just simple, sensational jeans that can work for every woman.

Why we love them:

These bring me back to the days of Hollister jeans in the very best way. They have a super lightweight feel, made from a blend of TENCEL™ lyocell and recycled cotton, and even come in a destroyed wash that is extra distressed around the knees. I'm dubbing them the perfect summer jeans, thanks to the featherlight feel and light wash, which have beach days and boardwalk strolls written all over them.

I adore the fit around the hips, which is relaxed without being baggy, so they give you a casual aesthetic and make your waist look smaller. Wear these for your Fourth of July parties and music festivals, or lazy days. They're super affordable, especially when you use our American Eagle coupons. All hail AE jeans!

Why we love them:

For those with a slimmer, rectangular build, these are ideal. The slim but relaxed fit ensures they're loose but aren't sagging. They also feature a gap-proof waistband (that seriously works), so they stretch over your hips and then come in at the waist for just the right fit, accommodating athletic and hourglass figures.

The first day they dropped, the brand sold over $1 million worth, speaking to just how in-demand this style is and how much people trust Good American's quality. Best of all, the vintage construction gives them that lived-in feel, so they're never stiff or constricting.

MOTHER knows best. If you're looking to invest in designer ankle jeans, these sustainable jeans are perfect. They're more expensive than the rest of this list, but are worth every penny (Psst, use our Shopbop coupons to save on these). The fading on the legs and whiskering on the front of the hips create a worn-in look that's chic and laidback, making these an ideal pair of go-to jeans.

Be prepared, once you put on MOTHER denim, you might never go back to another brand. Like magic, they get better with every wash, conforming to your body until they feel like they were made for you. With extra stretch, they're designed for your weekday to-do list or fun weekends.

Why we love them:

If you're a wide-leg-loving woman, we found these exceptional wide-leg ankle jeans for you. They offer a fitted waist and dramatically flared leg that flatters every figure (for real). I especially love these for curvy women who want to elongate their legs and highlight their waist, while still being comfortable and trendy. No belt needed, no waist gaps.

They have that saucy summertime look, but can also transition into fall with a pair of leather or suede boots. I'm partial to the acid wash and black wash ankle jean styles, but these come in a wide range of colors, from crisp white jeans to moody gray. Once you wear these, you'll be ordering them in every color.

How We Found the Best Ankle Length Jeans

No one wants to spend all day researching jeans (okay, maybe we do), so we let our algorithm do the heavy lifting. We analyzed the retailers we trust to identify bestselling styles with standout reviews, checked TikTok for trending picks, and looked to other fashion publications for notable mentions. Then we crunched the numbers to determine the final rankings and took a deep dive into the contenders to make sure every recommendation is truly worth your attention.

How Should Ankle Jeans Fit? (And What Inseam Do You Actually Need?)

Finding ankle-length jeans can be a challenge. Are they capris? Are they just short jeans? They are neither. Women's ankle jeans are specifically designed to stop at the skinniest part of your ankle, so they should not fall anywhere on your calves or below the top of the ball of your ankle. Of course, the ideal inseam depends heavily on your height, but a 26"–28" inseam is the common range, and the average woman finds their sweet spot 27"–27.5". I wear 27"!

Constance Richardson, the founder and style director of By Constance Rose in London and bespoke tailoring expert, explains the ideal fit: "The hem should just hit at or above the ankle bone. Too short looks like you've kind of outgrown it, and too long basically defeats the point and just turns it into a regular pair of jeans. It's just finding the balance in between that." The last thing we want is to look like a middle schooler who just had a growth spurt and hasn't gone shopping yet.

Because these sit higher on your leg than traditional jeans, you need to choose the right waist rise for your body type. With my short legs and thick thighs, I look best in high-rise ankle jeans (shout out to the Levi's), but if you have long legs and a slim build, a mid-rise (like the MOTHER straight ankle jeans) will probably work better for your proportions.

The material matters too. If it's a thick, rigid denim, I recommend sizing up for a little extra room. Much like ankle-length jeans that are too short, ones that are too tight can look like you've outgrown them. But stretchier jeans are more forgiving and look more natural in fit and movement.

The Best Ankle Jeans for Your Body Type

All jeans need to fit your body type just right to work, but that's especially true when it comes to ankle jeans that women of varying figures wear. I'll break it down by body type for you:

Hourglass/Pear

If you have a waist that's substantially smaller than your hips (hips 8–12" wider than your true waist), it's all about the right waist rise and waist design. Gap-proof waistband designs will be your best friend. Avoid the low–mid-rise styles and opt for high-rise ankle jeans, like the Levi's.

Curvy/Plus-Size

Curvier and rounder figures will benefit from high-rise styles and no-gap waistbands. You may want to explore plus-size ankle jeans in roomier silhouettes, like barrel jeans or wide-leg shapes. The Good American and Gap ankle-length jeans for women are excellent choices.

Straight/Athletic

If you want to accentuate slimness and length, go with straight-leg or slimmer styles of ankle-length jeans for women. But if you want to create a curvier look, try barrel jeans or wide-leg styles. However, I've always been a fan of loose, baggier styles on this body type because it creates a soft, nonchalant look.

Petite

I find the most important aspects of ankle jeans for petite women are the inseam and the waist rise. Avoid the wide-leg and barrel styles that can make you look shorter. Instead, go with the straight-leg styles and make sure the ankle hem falls less than an inch from your ankle bone.

Tall

Lastly, tall women should choose mid-rise jeans to avoid an awkward look around their torsos. The Old Navy OG Straight has a tall inseam option specifically designed for longer legs, so that's a style I suggest trying if you're above 5'7" or have especially long legs. If you want to play down your height, consider the barrel or wide-leg styles.

Ankle Jeans vs. Cropped Jeans: What's the Difference?

This is a common question. And a fair one, as the difference between ankle jeans and cropped jeans is subtle. Simply put, cropped jeans are a little shorter, falling around the middle of your calf. But really, there's no set hemline for cropped jeans, so it's a looser silhouette concept. Ankle jeans should stop just above your ankle. Capris are even shorter than cropped jeans, often landing a few inches below the knee for a breezy, playful look.

If you're wondering why you should choose ankle-length jeans over other short styles, Nicole Klementowicz, founder and fashion stylist for The Refresh Atelier, explains it beautifully, saying, "They bring an air of femininity to any outfit. Ankles are the slimmest part of the leg, and this style attracts that."

Ankle jeans are very intentional, while cropped jeans are more lax in their purpose and length. Stopping the hem at the smallest part of the ankle makes your legs look daintier and allows you to show off your footwear, making these the best jeans for statement shoes.

The ankle-length style isn't restricted to any width or shape. There are skinny ankle jeans, straight ankle jeans, barrel ankle jeans, flared ankle jeans, and wide leg ankle jeans. The wider styles are a modern take on the silhouette, catering to curvier figures while still having that stylish hem point.

The Bottom Line on Wearing Ankle Jeans

The bottom line on ankle jeans is all about the hemline. No matter your body type or height, this jean style can be flattering and fabulous if the hem sits right above your ankle bone. From strappy sandals to chunky sneakers to platform heels, your favorite shoes will finally get the chance to shine with your jean outfits.

Pay attention to the inseam and waist rise when shopping, and you'll find a pair of ankle jeans that you reach for day after day.
