I just finished Family Life by Akhil Sharma, mostly because David Sedaris encouraged his audience to do so when he was last in Charleston (and my allegiance to Sedaris never wavers). It was both incredibly sad and very touching; it made me stop and count my blessings.

I decompress each day by drawing a piping hot bath—I’m not afraid of wrinkly fingers. I have literally the fluffiest towels, the best candles, a glass of wine, and a good book—what else does one need?

Goat cheese. When I studied in Paris, all my French gal pals called me “Caaallldeeerrrrr” [insert bleating voice] because all I’d ever eat was warm goat cheese salads at the brasseries.

I want to say I’d be an interior designer in another life—but the truth is, I’d be a personal organizer. I live for huggable hangers and label makers, and I absolutely relish trying to thwart others’ hoarding tendencies.

What is something that recently moved you:

A moving truck—ha! Oh but emotionally? The grace my sisters show under pressure—whipping up a Lowcountry boil for 80 people on the Fourth of July. There is nothing more poignant than watching Southern hospitality kick into full gear.

What is the best gift you’ve ever received:

The very best gift I’ve ever been given is my education. My mama always said "I’d take in people’s wash if it meant giving you the very best schooling"—and I know she meant it.

What’s the most exciting thing in your life right now:

We just moved into a historic home, and we’ve yet to hang a single tv. We are hauling my childhood piano up from Tennessee and starting a family band—I kid you not—anything to stay blissfully off the grid!
