The Interview —

Emily Henderson, Interior Designer, Stylist, Best-Selling Author and TV Personality

Interior Designer, Stylist, Best-Selling Author and TV Personality

Emily Henderson is an interior designer, stylist, blogger, writer and tv personality. She can talk about interior design til the couch comes home and she does so on her highly trafficked blog, Style by Emily Henderson. Born and raised in Oregon, she trained as a prop stylist in New York and after moving to LA in 2008 she won HGTV DesignStar, then hosted her own style show ‘Secrets From a Stylist’. She lives with her husband and two young kids and spends most of her time documenting all her design projects, working as Targets Home Spokesperson, and chasing her toddlers (and dreams). Her goal is to help people feel empowered to decorate their homes to represent themselves, and teaches them how to do it with the least amount of mistakes possible. Favorite Instagram account to follow:

Emily

My friend @jengotch is hilarious on insta-story. She is the founder and creative director of @shopbando and her hilarious irreverence and optimism is addictive.

Your biggest fashion faux pas, or a regrettable purchase/style phase:

Emily

My biggest fashion faux pas was the chaps (yes, the cowboy pant, but a vintage cotton version from the 70’s) that I rocked all over Europe in 2001. I’m sorry, I forgot to add that I paired it with a sequin tube top. My family still talks about it and it made me (in)famous in Dublin.

Your current Netflix addiction:

Emily

I can’t stop watching The Handmaid's Tale and I’m so depressed about it in so many ways.

R&S

What do you love most about your work:

Emily

I love the unpredictability of photo shoots and digital media. Working in this industry forces you to stay young and innovative and to constantly be pushing it. I also love writing about style and knowing that people are happier with their homes because of my blog.

One piece of advice you would give your 18-year-old self:

Emily

If I could give my 18-year-old self advice it would be to learn HTML code, Photoshop, Sketchup, and Illustrator. Don’t leave college without those skills, no matter what your major is.

Your motto in life:

Emily

My motto is: Work Hard and Be Nice to People. I have a framed poster in my son's room and I’m hammering it into their heads every day. It's 100% the reason why I’m successful.

R&S

The trend you hope never goes out of style:

Emily

I hope the shapeless dress trend never goes out of style. I love it, my husband hates it.

R&S

The skill or sport you’re dying to learn:

Emily

The fact that I don’t know how to work a DSLR camera is my ultimate annoyance. It would make my life (and job) so much easier.

R&S

Your celebrity crush and why:

Emily

My celebrity crush is Kristen Bell. I’ve always said that when I grow up I want to be Veronica Mars. She’s wickedly talented and seems like a genuinely honest person.

If you weren’t a stylist, you’d be a...

Emily

If I weren’t a stylist, I’d be a romance novel author. I can talk about love all day long.
