The Interview —

Sarah Gibson Tuttle, Founder of Olive & June

Founder of Olive & June

Sarah Gibson Tuttle is the founder of Olive & June. She named the salon after her great-grandmother and grandmother, the Gibson women who taught her the importance of having high standards and a big heart. Before opening the Beverly Hills flagship nail salon in August 2013, Sarah worked for 10 years as an equity sales trader at JP Morgan & Morgan Stanley in New York City. But quality of life wooed her out west. When she arrived, she realized Los Angeles had everything she wanted except for the perfect nail salon. Seeing the opportunity to create a pretty space where women could expect and enjoy expert nail care on a regular basis and spend time with their friends, Sarah opened Olive & June. Sarah lives in LA with her husband and 3 year-old daughter (who has the most amazing hair). Be sure to check out Olive & June on Instagram!

R&S

What lead you to start Olive & June:

Sarah

While preparing to move from New York, I started to scope out where "my nail spot" would be in LA. One day a light bulb went off and I realized that the only way to have a place that my friends and I loved going to was to create it.

R&S

What was one of the biggest challenges you were faced in starting your business and how did you overcome this obstacle:

Sarah

So many! Learning a new industry was hard, especially such a big jump from finance to beauty. Always being open to listen and learn every day was really critical.

Who has had the biggest impact on your career:

Sarah

My grandmother, June, whom Olive & June is named after, worked every day until she turned 90. She never stops and very much instilled that work ethic in me.

Dark colors were so out last year, everyone was getting neutrals. I think they will come back this fall/winter.
