<p>I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Partly because I’m 41 and starting to understand how much comfort and support matter. And partly because my mom, who is in her mid-60s (and who happens to be my own personal style icon), has become my favorite example of this. She is choosing different styles than she used to, but they are still stylish, fashionable, and very much her.</p>

<p>Nothing boring. No frumpy suits. She’s being more intentional with her swimsuit choices and going for better fabrics, flattering necklines, more support, and silhouettes that suit her. And isn’t that the whole point? It’s not about dressing for your age but rather about finding swimwear that supports your body while still matching your own personal style.</p>

<p>When you start your search for the perfect bathing suit, these are the details to keep in mind that make all the difference.</p>

<h3>Supportive Fabrics</h3>

<p>Fabric quality is everything. A thin, flimsy swimsuit is going to be less supportive, even if the design is good. I look for stretchy fabrics with good recovery. That means they stretch with you but go right back to their original state rather than getting saggy.</p>

<p>I also find that fully lined suits are also usually worth the extra investment. They give better coverage and tend to have more structured and smoother fit.</p>

<p>If you swim a lot, then durability matters. Chlorine, saltwater, and sun can all be tough on swimwear, so look for fabric blends with nylon or polyester plus elastane, spandex, or Lycra for stretch and recovery. I usually look for at least 10% elastane or spandex, with many supportive suits sitting somewhere in the 15% to 20% range.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahblaser" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Sarah Blaser</a>, Founder and Designer of Serotone Swim, says that a higher spandex count can often indicate better stretch recovery, but the overall fabric quality matters just as much. She says that nylon is durable but polyester can be just as good as long as the fabric surface is dense and smooth. Avoid anything microfiber or peached. Prints last longer on polyester fabrics as it’s more resistant to chlorine and fading.</p>

<h3>Adjustable Straps and Bust Support</h3>

<p>Adjustable straps are ALWAYS one of the first things I look for. If they’re not adjustable, that’s an immediate no. You need to be able to tighten or loosen them to fit your body. No one wants to be constantly pulling up slipping straps, which is what almost always happens with non-adjustable ones.</p>

<p>For bust support, built-in bras, soft cups, a shelf bra, underwire, and bra-sized swimwear can all be helpful, but it really depends on what feels best on your body. Some women like the secure feel of underwire but others find them uncomfortable and prefer the softer feel of molded cups or a shelf bra.</p>

<p>If you have a larger bust, prioritize structure over trend every time. Look for wider, adjustable straps, reinforced seams, and enough coverage through the cups so that everything stays in the right place.</p>

<h3>Tummy Control and Texture</h3>

<p>Let’s talk about tummy control swimsuits for a sec because it’s time to reframe them. They’re not about hiding your body, but about support and structure. A power mesh panel, shirred waist, side boning, wrap detail, or ruched midsection can make a swimsuit feel more secure. And it can look great too.</p>

<p>Ruching has stayed popular for a reason, after all. It adds dimension and movement to the fabric. But one of my favorite updates for summer 2026 has to be crinkle fabric. I love a <a href="https://www.rankandstyle.com/top-10-list/best-crinkle-swimsuits">crinkle swimsuit</a> because it gives that same subtle blurring effect as ruching, but it feels more fashion-forward and the fabric is super forgiving and flattering.</p>

I’ve seen people prioritize photos, but forget about the need for wearing something comfortable that they can sit in for hours and walk around in. Also, can you imagine showing up without a layering piece on a blustery, rainy day?</p>

<p>Graduation sits in this weird middle space where neither is strictly formal nor entirely casual. Most ceremonies fall somewhere in this broad range between <a href="https://www.rankandstyle.com/articles/business-casual-capsule-wardrobe-for-work">business casual</a> and semi-formal, which is why so many people end up overthinking their outfits. College graduations are typically a little dressier than high school graduations because they have larger venues and more upscale post-ceremony dinners, but it really depends on the specific school.</p>

<p>Knowing the location first is vital when putting your outfit together. When grass and stadium steps enter the chat, outdoor ceremonies can completely change your outfit plans. With indoor graduations, you won’t have to worry about sweating through layers but may want to remember to bring one in case the AC is extra cold.</p>

<p>The timing of the ceremony plays a role as well. Morning ceremonies can handle lighter garments that are more airy for the daytime, while evening graduations transition to darker colors or dressier silhouettes. When you can’t decide between two outfits, it never fails to go with the dressier one. If ever in doubt, it's always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.</p>

The moment you zip the gown up and settle into your seat, those stiff fabrics and chunky layers will let you know you made the wrong choice. That’s why I recommend wearing fabrics under your gown that move with you. I love flowy knee or midi length dresses for this reason, because they stay comfortable, photograph well, and don't bunch awkwardly under the robe.</p>

<p>Jumpsuits are great options too, but it's best to choose relaxed styles rather than too tight ones to avoid it feeling like a sauna under your gown. Choosing a flat-laying neckline will be your life saver. V-necks and scoop necks will sit more comfortably under the gown versus a cowl or collar. If it’s a spring or summer ceremony, I say ditch high necklines entirely, they can trap heat and feel restrictive once the gown is fully on.</p>

<h2>What to Wear as a Guest to Graduation</h2>

<p>If you're attending as a guest, I’d lean towards outfits that feel classy yet comfortable. Midi dresses are always an easy choice, especially for mothers attending graduations; they’re comfortable, photogenic, and work for post-graduation celebrations. I especially like tailored trousers and blouses for indoor ceremonies because they still feel comfortable without looking too casual. Quiet style works best, so keep colors neutral and accessories minimal. If you don’t want to wear a dress and want something easy, a simple jumpsuit is the perfect option. Go for the styles with tailored legs or wide legs for a clean look.</p>

<p>Graduations are one of those occasions where less is usually more. The people who always tend to look seamless at graduations rarely wear the loudest outfits; they wear simple pieces that fit well. I’d avoid ripped jeans, flip-flops, or partywear. As a guest, it’s best to wear an outfit that complements the moment instead of competing with it.</p>
