Leisure Meets Luxury for Your Vacation Style

The flight is booked, the hotel reserved, and you’re mentally already sipping cocktails in the sand. I’m so happy for you! Now, it’s time to shop and pack, and that’s one of the most fun parts of a vacation.

For warm-weather destinations where beaches surround me and the pina coladas flow like water, the dress code is “resort casual.” That means fun colors and light fabrics and silhouettes that make you feel like a beach goddess. You’ve very likely heard of this aesthetic, but you might not know how to create a vacation wardrobe that fits it. That’s why I’m here.

What Defines Resort Casual Attire

“Resort casual” can be an ambiguous term, so let me bring some clarity to it. Once you understand what constitutes resort casual wear, packing for a high-end resort becomes a tropical breeze, so look for these staple characteristics.

Joyful, Tranquil Colors

I don’t like to be too hard and fast about fashion “rules,” because that’s no fun. Think of these as friendly guidelines instead, and guideline number one is that resort casual clothing typically includes happy colors and relaxing neutrals. Lean into vibrant hues and ethereal pastels, like tangerine orange or butter yellow (yeah, that’s still trendy right now).

If color scares you (I get it), you can stick to neutral hues, but keep them on the paler side. The best shades include beige or champagne. Avoid heavy, dark colors, like black or mocha brown. Black can be chic on vacation, but it’s not a typical “resort” color.

Distinct Patterns

Please don’t shy away from patterns! Even if you’re not usually a pattern person, your sunny vacation is the perfect moment to step out of your comfort zone with bold florals, playful polka dots, Mediterranean prints (Missoni print is having a moment), paisley, geometric designs, and even typography patterns. Stripes are a classic choice as well, and one of the easier ones for the pattern-averse folks.

I also love more literal patterns that align with your destination. If you need beach resort outfits, wear a dress spotted with seashells. If you’re in Hawaii, find pants with palm trees on them. It’s not cheesy; it’s just on-theme.

Elevated Textures

Resortwear for women often has interesting and luxurious textures that elevate the look. If you’re wary of patterns, textures are a suitable substitute. Look for clothes with embroidery, cutouts, ruffles, fringes, or glossy finishes. I also love to pack clothes with knitted textures, velvet accents, lace detailing, or mesh overlays.

You can play with sparkly styles that feature sequins or rhinestones, but it’s not traditional for resort styles; it’s a little too flashy. But much like black, it can work when done carefully. For example, beaded pearls on a purse or a sparkly seashell can fit the vibe.

Relaxed Silhouettes

Tight jeans? Fitted jackets? Bulky belts? Hard pass. What is resort casual attire if not a chance to sink into leisure and comfort while you’re on vacation? Leave the bodycon dresses in your closet and opt for loose, flowy, even billowing styles that are just as cozy as your favorite PJs.

The laidback shapes and silhouettes emphasize the “casual” part of casual resortwear, so avoid clothes that feel restrictive or overly tailored. We’re not going for slinky and fitted; we’re going for flowy and free.

Light Fabrics

Relaxed silhouettes also mean light, airy fabrics. Choose clothes made with linen, 100% cotton, open knits, lace, and similar fabrics. Avoid heavier materials like leather or denim.

With this, there are plenty of exceptions to the “rule,” especially if you’re traveling to a place that could get chilly. For example, Palm Springs and Las Vegas are desert destinations that get much colder at night. However, for the resort casual aesthetic, your suitcase should consist mostly of these more delicate fabrics.

Vacation-Worthy Tops

Your resort casual tops should be relaxed but still elegant: a lace camisole, a striped, oversized button-down, a short-sleeved sweater. These tops can be sexy, like a stretchy tube top, or more refined and mature, like a linen vest. One of my favorite resort tops is actually just a silk scarf tied to look like a strapless shirt. It’s effortlessly elegant and looks expensive, something an heiress might wear.

Oversized button-downs and boxy tees can double as beach cover-ups, making it easy to pack for beach days and other outings. And your slinkier styles can be dressed down with linen pants or dressed up with a silk slip skirt.

Free-Flowing Bottoms

No heavy jeans or work slacks digging into your skin on vacation—hallelujah! For resort casual attire, all your bottoms should be uber-comfy and relaxed, so opt for silhouettes that let you move with ease. And look for drawstring or elastic waistbands that provide extra comfort.

I’m talking about linen pants that move with the wind and crocheted shorts that leave you with weird but wonderful tan lines. If there was ever a time to bust out those capris that never seem to fit the occasion, this is it. Wide-leg pants, especially balloon pants or palazzo pants, are sensational for resort outfits as well. You can wear denim, but go for more laidback cuts, lighter fabrics like chambray, and experiment with bold colors or embroidery.

Breezy Dresses

Of course, you need to pack fabulous and graceful dresses for the trip. These silhouettes can range from tunic or button-down T-shirt styles to ballooning maxi dresses and twirly babydoll styles. The possibilities are ample, just avoid pieces that feel structured or heavily tailored. Anything that feels office-y should be left in your closet.

I never go on a warm vacation without one of my trusty silk slip dresses, which always look elegant but feel like sleepwear (I guess the design technically is for sleeping). Playful mini dresses, sexy knit dresses, fringed styles, saucy cutout looks, and halter dresses are all on the resort menu too.

Effortless Matching Sets and Rompers

On a vacation with lots of walking, dresses and skirts may leave you feeling exposed. That’s where resort casual rompers come to the rescue. I’m also lumping skorts in with rompers, as they are similarly useful. Like with all the dresses and bottoms, you want to pack roomy rompers if you’re going for a resort casual style. These keep you comfortable on every kind of adventure, but also make it snappy to put stylish but easygoing vacation outfits together.

Matching sets are similarly effortless. They can be composed of shorts, pants, mini skirts, maxi skirts, midi skirts, tees, tanks, button-downs, crop tops, and whatever other silhouettes call to you. For a set, you can lean into a striking pattern or keep things sophisticated with a solid-colored design. You can also mix and match them with other pieces to make more outfits.

Swimwear

Don’t forget your bathing suits! For the most part, any bathing suit can qualify as resort casual attire. However, I think you should lean away from athletic-looking swimwear with zippers and harsh lines. Channel your mermaid side or opt for a vintage 1950s vibe that feels cool and oceanic.

Whether it’s a one-piece, a bikini, or a tankini, just be sure it delivers that easy-breezy energy. Oh, and add some saucy beach coverups to your packing list so you can walk to the beach in style.

Accessorizing Your Resort Looks

To complete these women’s resort outfits, you need the right accessories. Keep the chill aesthetics in mind and lean into organic materials and beachy accents.

Sandals, Espadrilles, and Slides

Open toes are the name of the game here, so bring all your favorite sandals, flip-flops, slides, and espadrilles. You can also bring a pair of sneakers if you plan to do a ton of walking. If you pack heels, make sure they’re not too formal (wedges are the way to go).

Jewelry Basics and Statement Pieces

I don’t like to deal with fussy jewelry on vacation, so I stick to my basics and personality pieces for the most part. But if you have fancy plans at some point, definitely bring a few statement pieces with a tropical vibe, like fringed earrings or beach-inspired necklaces.

Beach Totes and Unique Bags

Every gal needs a beach tote on a resort vacation, so don’t forget to pack that. I also love to bring tiny (like too small to even fit your phone) statement bags that take evening outfits to the next level. They bring a little pizzazz to simple vacation outfits.

Wide Hats, Silk Scarves, and Claw Clips

You might just want to let your hair down, literally and figuratively, for your vacation. But for greasy hair days or windy weather, I recommend packing beach-chic wide-brim hats, cute claw clips, silk scarves (that can double as shirts!), and patterned scrunchies.

Packing Your Suitcase

If the packing part of this overwhelms you, I highly recommend you learn more about travel capsule wardrobes and how to build one. It’s all about choosing items that can be styled in multiple ways and complement one another. With resort casual, it can be trickier because of the distinct colors and patterns. My advice is to:

  • Select a statement piece/outfit and build around that
  • Settle on a color palette you can stick to
  • Mix in lots of neutral items
  • Plan out (and try on) all your possible outfits
  • Repack and refine

For a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, it’s okay to pack “aspirational” outfits, which I generally advise against. But it’s vacation! It’s the best time to dress out of your comfort zone, just be sure to mix in plenty of reliable basics in case you don’t get up the courage to wear the flashier looks.

Dress Like You’re on Vacation

When selecting your vacation pieces, it helps to lean into pieces that capture your destination. If you’re going to Greece, embrace the cobalt blues and pristine whites. For vacations to Bermuda, pack pieces with large floral prints and seashell accents. A Cape Cod vacation calls for pale blues and striped styles. But most importantly, resort casual attire should make you feel comfortable and unconcerned, because that’s how the vacation vibes should be.
