Learn How To Shop and Style Jewelry With Intention, Not Impulse

A sensational jewelry collection doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time (and strategy) to build one that suits your style, but once you understand what you need and what to look for, you can revamp your jewelry box and make every outfit sparkle.

It’s easy to get swept up in trends, be tempted by steep discounts, overestimate your love for a flashy piece, or get lost in a jewelry collection that feels chaotic. I’ll help you understand what pieces deserve a spot in your box, how to choose high-quality jewelry, how to style them with your clothes, and how to shop with clarity. In the end, you’ll have a versatile jewelry wardrobe that makes accessorizing feel like second nature.

Getting Started

Not sure how to start? You’re in the right spot. Here’s how to begin your jewelry journey.

Take Inventory and Declutter

What are we working with? Is your jewelry box full of nothing but cobwebs? Or are there a handful of pieces you adore and want to add to? It’s time to evaluate what you already have, keep what you love, and say goodbye to what’s not vibing with you.

Don’t rush through this process. Look at every piece you have, try them all on and see how you feel. If you have the dedication and patience, try wearing every single item for a day before you make a final decision.

Know Your Sizing

Start by figuring out your ring size for every finger. Next, take your wrist measurements for bracelets. You can also think about earring sizes in terms of gauges, as you may dislike hoops or hooks that are too snug and squeeze your ear.

For necklaces, get a sense of the length you like. Some people like a shorter necklace that sits above their collarbone (usually 14-16 inches), while others like long chains that hang over their tops (22-28 inches). Or maybe you like a happy medium (18-20 inches).

Explore Your Preferences

You don’t have to settle on any one necklace length, but it’s wise to understand jewelry sizing so you can figure out what you like best. Long necklaces might get in your way, or short ones may feel constricting. Think about weight too. Can you comfortably wear heavy earrings all day, or only for a few hours?

Again, no need to lock in any decisions. But as you assess your collection and shop, think about what appeals to you. Pay attention to the types of metal, gems, sizes, weights, and styles you gravitate toward.

Consider Your Whole Wardrobe

Your jewelry wardrobe is part of your wardrobe, so they should complement one another. If all your clothes are muted neutrals with clean lines, your jewelry can follow suit. On the other hand, if you’re all about patterns, bright colors, and billowing silhouettes, look for more dynamic and exciting jewelry pieces.

Core Jewelry Pieces To Build Your Collection

The jewelry pieces every woman needs tend to fall into three categories: basics, statements, and personal pieces.

The Basics

The basics are the foundation of your jewelry collection. These are the pieces you can effortlessly wear day in and day out, and no one will think “oh, she’s wearing that again?” They’re not show-stoppers, but they help every look feel more polished.

These are everyday jewelry staples:

Above all else, you need to be comfortable in your basics. Secondly, they should be understated and high-quality. You should be able to go about your life without them getting in your way or falling apart.

The Statements

Your statement pieces are not shy or subtle; they are bold. They should amp up every outfit you wear them with and be one of the first things people notice (and compliment). You won’t wear these every day, but you’ll bust them out for weddings, special date nights, formal events, or the days where you want to be a little extra.

They could be:

  • Sparkly pendant necklaces
  • Dramatic feather earrings
  • Chunky gemstone rings
  • Regal bracelets
  • Saucy chokers

Statement jewelry can follow trends or contrast them completely—that’s up to you. These should not blend in with your wardrobe. If you can wear an item with almost everything in your closet, it’s probably not a statement piece.

The Personality Pieces

Personality pieces are all about infusing you into your collection. They’re items that aren’t too loud or too simple, and they represent your personal style and what makes you special.

Your personality pieces could be:

  • Family heirlooms
  • Unique thrifted pieces
  • Initial or name jewelry
  • Birthstone pieces
  • Custom designs
  • Charm bracelets

Just go with your gut, because true personality pieces will pick you.

Assessing and Understanding Jewelry Quality

Let’s squash this myth: You don’t need to spend a fortune to build your jewelry collection. However, with jewelry, you often get what you pay for. A high-quality necklace doesn’t need to cost $1,000, but you’re unlikely to find true quality in a $10 piece.

Maggie Gillette, a fashion expert for major style outlets, explains:

“It's more important to consider the metal quality than the brand name. While you can shop at Tiffany’s or Cartier, you can also find high quality pieces from independent businesses or even online from brands like Quince.”

I’ll explain how to tell if jewelry is worth the money or not.

Precious Metals

Selecting high-quality metals is key to building a lasting jewelry collection that you’ll love. We’ve all experienced the horror of realizing your finger or earlobes have turned green because of a cheap piece. Avoid materials that tarnish quickly, such as nickel, lead, and cadmium.

Here are better options:

  • Stainless Steel: A durable, hypoallergenic, budget-friendly metal with moderate brightness
  • Sterling Silver: A bright, hypoallergenic metal made of 90%+ pure silver
  • Gold Plated: Metal coated in a thin layer of gold, which looks brilliant but can wear off over time
  • Gold Filled: Metal coated in a thick layer of gold, creating a heavier feel and better durability
  • Solid Gold: Extremely durable, high-purity gold that will last a lifetime (but probably longer)

The higher the karat, the purer the gold. Solid gold pieces can be mixed with other metals to improve durability, but this compromises the vibrant gold color. So lower-karat pieces are paler in color and less pure, but more durable.

You don’t need to drop your whole paycheck on solid gold every time you want a new piece, but don’t settle for those green meanies. Thankfully, stainless steel, sterling silver, and gold-plated are very affordable, durable, and lovely.

Gemstones and Crystals

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but we’re allowed to have more than one friend.

Popular gemstones include:

  • Diamonds
  • Sapphires
  • Rubies
  • Emeralds
  • Pearls
  • Opals
  • Garnets
  • Moissanite

Genuine gemstones can be quite expensive. However, their brilliance and authenticity make them worthwhile investment pieces—if they’re what you truly want.

I recommend splurging on high-end gemstones when it comes to basics or personality pieces. For statement pieces, it’s okay to save money, since you wear them less. But you can still get that sparkle with crystals or inexpensive gemstones, such as cubic zirconia or quartz.

Construction

Assessing jewelry construction is tough when you’re not a pro. But once you know what to look for, it’s easier.

Look for these green flags:

  • Strong clasps and mechanisms that open/close smoothly
  • Polished, smooth surfaces with no rough edges or marks
  • Prongs and other settings that are secure and flush with gemstones
  • A heavy weight and solid feel in your hand
  • Perfectly matching metals and details across all elements

Avoid pieces that appear to use glue to secure parts or have uneven textures across materials. A brilliant way to evaluate a piece is by looking at the back, underside, or any elements that wouldn’t be prominently displayed when you’re wearing it.

Truly high-quality pieces are high-quality throughout, not just the parts people will see.

Tips for Shopping for Jewelry

Before you hit the stores and sites, keep these tips in mind.

Be Realistic About Your Lifestyle

Danielle Keller Aviram, a jewelry designer, maker, and researcher, highlights the importance of shopping for your habits:

“Before you buy something, ask yourself: Can I wear this all day? Can I layer it? Can I travel with it? Can I wear it with other things I already own? If the answer is no, it might end up collecting dust between the few times you wear it.”

Shop for pieces you see yourself wearing, not ones you aspire to wear.

You Have To Love, Love, Love It

The exception here can be your basics, as a plain gold hoop might not have you tripping over yourself with excitement. But for every other piece you buy, you should feel like you can’t live without it and that it was made for you. It should be the kind of piece that, if you walk away from it now, you’ll think about it forever.

Quality Over Quantity

How many jewelry pieces should you have? It varies by person. That might not be the answer you were looking for, but it’s important not to get caught up in the size of your collection. A jewelry box with a dozen intentional pieces will always be better than a chest full of 100 pieces that you feel lukewarm about.

Respect Your Budget

You deserve better than chintzy jewelry from Claire’s, but not everything in your wardrobe needs to be from Tiffany & Co. Remember, money can’t buy you taste. Just because something is expensive, that doesn’t mean it’s better or that it’s right for you. You can try shopping jewelry sales to get deals on BaubleBar, Kay Jewelers, and other favorites, but breaking your budget for a piece you think you should have will just hurt in the long run.

Tips for Styling Jewelry

Alright, you’ve got the goods. Now, let’s wear them.

Gold or Silver?

Based on your skin’s natural undertones, you can determine what colors and metals look best on you. If you have cool undertones, stick with all silver jewelry. In contrast, gold looks best on warm-toned skin. You can mix metals, as long as you create a balance. Don’t wear nine silver rings and one gold. Don’t wear gold bracelets and necklaces with only silver earrings. The metals need to mingle, so consider mixed metal layered necklaces, two-tone earrings, and silver and gold rings stacked together.

Layering Jewelry

Try to mix different styles, lengths, weights, textures, and gems when layering. You can wear short necklaces with long ones, rigid bracelets with flexible ones, dangly earrings with little studs, and geometric rings with rounded ones. Mix and match your pieces and see what feels right. You might like a pearl choker with a gold lariat necklace. Or you may load up your neck with three silver and three gold necklaces for an indulgent style. The point is, you don’t need to stop at one necklace, bracelet, or ring.

Pairing Pieces With Outfits

Your jewelry should feel like the final piece of the puzzle, flowing perfectly with the rest of your outfit. Don’t force a pendant necklace over a high neckline or clunky bracelets over flowy sleeves. Pick jewelry pieces that echo your outfit’s aesthetic, whether that’s sleek and tailored or frilly and fun. When in doubt, placing jewelry wherever you’re showing bare skin is a good rule of thumb.

Have Fun on Your Jewelry Journey

It can feel like there are tons of “rules” surrounding jewelry, but all that matters is that you wear pieces that help you shine. Just like a thoughtful capsule wardrobe, your jewelry collection should cater to your lifestyle and taste. If you hop on trends too quickly, you may feel like you wasted money on pieces that you never wear. And if you focus too heavily on basics or statement pieces, your collection may feel boring or inaccessible. That’s why it’s so important to curate a mix of everyday jewelry and pieces that will wow.

Focus on finding pieces that speak to you, rather than rushing to build up a robust collection. Before you know it, you’ll have a jewelry wardrobe that inspires confidence and creativity in every outfit.
