Barrel leg jeans are on our radar, and probably on yours too. Maybe you've been admiring them from afar on Instagram, but now you're tiptoeing toward a pair of your very own. We're here to make sure you find the best barrel jeans for you, so you can embrace this style with open arms.
This is a somewhat complicated jean silhouette, blending skinny and baggy jean trends into something that feels simultaneously relaxed and refined. They're not always easy to style, and finding the right fit can be tricky. But once you have a pair of barrel jeans that complement your figure, you'll understand what all the hype over this denim shape is about.
They can look severe on the hanger, which deters many people from giving them a chance, especially those who aren't adventurous with their denim choices (like me). However, they're amazingly flattering once you know how to find your perfect fit. And to help you do that, the Rank & Style algorithm found the 10 best barrel leg jeans for every body type.
Discover barrel jeans with just the right amount of volume, the perfect inseam length, your ideal fabric weight, and a to-die-for denim wash on this list.

Why we love them
These barrel jeans from Free People can turn the barrel haters into barrel believers. JLo has been spotted in these, cementing them as a fashionable choice for hourglass figures and curvy women. They deliver a beautiful balance of volume and mid-rise tailoring, creating a barrel shape that's still flattering. As much as I love stretchy or soft denim, the rigid, non-stretch cotton-lyocell blend that these jeans are made of is key to keeping the barrel shape. But the loose fit ensures you can still move and stay comfy in them.
My favorite thing about these barrel pants is the ample color options, from the Optic White hue to the sugary sweet Pink Skies style. These were Nordstrom's top-selling barrel jeans in 2024, yet they're reasonably priced, so you can grab multiple washes. With slash seams that bring a retro look and a sanded finish, they feel unique and expressive while still working seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe.

Why we love them
"Slim barrel leg" might sound like a contradiction, but these Madewell jeans offer the trendy shape in a more restrained form. If the volume you get with barrel jeans is a bit too much for you, these are perfect, complete with darts at the knee that reign in the volume around the lower legs. The vintage cone-style cotton has a medium-heavy feel that can transition from season to season, and the lack of stretch enhances durability while maintaining the structured shape that defines barrel jeans.
They come in every classic jean wash you could want, from pale arctic blue to deep indigo, along with laidback black and a pretty pink wash. The washes also differ slightly in design, with some incorporating deeper, heavily stitched front pockets or seams lined with grommets for an edgier look. The bottom line with these is that they're the best barrel jeans for those hesitant to try barrel jeans.

Why we love them
For women who don't fit into the average height range, Gap has you (and your legs) covered. These barrel jeans have five inseam/fit options, catering to short, petite, regular, long, and tall frames, plus a curvy option. Despite what many people think, I believe barrel leg jeans can work on every body type, you just have to get the right fit, more on that later. But we're declaring these the best barrel jeans for petites, thanks to the strong taper and short inseam options.
The high-rise design makes them perfect for laidback outfits, but with the right accessories, you can dress them up for a night out. They come in over a dozen classic denim washes, plus some fun colors and prints (cheetah barrel jeans, anyone?). And at a super affordable price point (especially with a Gap coupon), they're one of the most accessible barrel jeans on this list, both in fit and cost.

“I really love the GAP High Waist Barrel Jeans. What I really like about them is that the shape feels modern and stylish without being too exaggerated. I know barrel jeans are very trendy right now, but these made me feel genuinely comfortable and confident, not awkward at all.
They look amazing with pretty much everything: ballerinas, flip-flops, and of course sneakers. Such a great fit and an easy way to wear the trend in a really flattering way!”—Anastasia, Team Lead

Why we love them
These plus-size barrel jeans come in sizes 24-34, with extra room around the hips and thighs, ensuring there's no awkward waist gap. For the tall girls and the thick girls, these are the barrel jeans for you, with three inseam options on top of the inclusive sizing. Contrary to what you might think, the best barrel jeans for curvy women actually have more volume around the hips and thighs, and these deliver on that.
For this silhouette, Abercrombie & Fitch decided to lean into the light neutrals, with ecru and crisp white color options. I know these hues can be intimidating, but even on curvier bodies, white jeans can be flattering and fierce. This is especially true when it comes to these jeans, which don't just come in larger sizes; they were engineered to complement curves.

We all hate a waist gap, and Levi's understands that. With high-rise barrel jeans, that gap can be substantial, but these ones feature a clever cinched-waist design. It's almost like a built-in belt, helping define your waist without getting stuck on your hips or sacrificing the oh-so-cool barrel shape. All you need to do is take a look at the TikTok reviews under #leviscinchbarrel, and you'll understand how life-changing the cinch feature can be.
When buying these high-waisted barrel jeans, you pick your waist size and your length, so you get a pair of jeans that actually fit. A real miracle, I know. They come in six familiar Levi's washes, so you can grab black barrel jeans that go with everything, or a light wash just in time for summer. And they have that premium denim feel that Levi's is known for, with a rigid texture that holds up wear after wear, wash after wash.

"I really like the wide leg jeans trend right now and, of course, this includes barrel jeans. The Levi's Cinch Barrel Jeans in particular are such a great find. The fabric is really lightweight, which makes them perfect for summer, and the fit gives you this amazing sense of freedom. Honestly, they feel so comfortable you could go straight from the street to a yoga class.
Style-wise, they look just as good as they feel. I'm 5'4"" and wearing a size 25, and the fit is spot on. I tried both the classic blue and dark blue wash, and ended up going home with the dark blue—I have zero regrets."—Anastasia, Team Lead

If you're willing to spend a little more for luxury, the Shon Barrel Jeans from Nili Lotan are dripping with that designer energy. Unlike most barrel jeans, these are made with stretchy denim—Japanese stretch denim, to be precise. The cotton and poly blend gives you more flexibility and freedom of movement. As far as fit goes, I would call these baggy barrel jeans, which only amps up the comfort and casual feel. Many reviewers note that these run large, so check the measurements and be prepared to size down accordingly.
These are an investment, but the elevated comfort and stylish intentionality they offer will make them a go-to in your wardrobe for years to come. From the dramatic long front pockets to the eccentric seamed knees, they're distinct without being loud. Choose from a rich indigo wash or a sun-faded blue.

Quince has become one of the essential places for trendy and timeless pieces that deliver quality and affordability, and these slim barrel jeans are no exception. The extra stretchy denim allows you to bend, squat, and split as needed, so if you're a denim-averse fashionista like me, you'll vibe with these. They don't scratch at your skin or punish you for trying to cross your legs. It feels like you're wearing leggings, but you look thoughtfully styled.
Because of this level of comfort, I love these barrel leg jeans for my work-from-home days when I want to feel put-together without subjecting myself to the harshness of traditional denim. The slimmer silhouette offers a subtler barrel shape, ideal if you're not ready to fully commit to all that volume. What really makes these a standout product is the low, low price for such high-quality construction.

These are barrel jeans with an attitude. They’re the best women's barrel jeans for anyone who wants to wholeheartedly lean into the trend, with a voluminous silhouette that doesn't shy away from the shape. They feel easygoing but look fashion-forward, giving you a casually cool aesthetic. If you love just a hint of stretch, these deliver, offering the firm material you need for barrel jeans while still giving you flexibility.
The medium blue wash is easy to style, working for both daytime and nighttime outfits. Those double darts on the inner knees create an intriguing detail that takes these beyond your basic barrel pants. They’re easily one of the most versatile pants in our roundup, working for lazy days and special outings.

These cream barrel jeans are giving Gwenyth Paltrow when she's in resort casual mode. The warm but soft color gives them an upscale air, so they're sensational for days in the office or your classy Sunday brunch outfits. They're slight barrel jeans, which makes them wonderful for petite figures, with a bottom hem that falls at just the right spot on your ankles. If you're wearing shoes you want to show off, these make sure your footwear can still shine.
MOTHER's premium LA-made construction will hold its form through many laundry days, but they do slowly soften with each wash, which only makes the jeans cozier and more relaxed in appearance. They're the ultimate summer denim, with a teensy bit of stretch and a luxe look.

Old Navy always comes through with the deals and discounts. These are exceptionally affordable, so you can dive right into the barrel jeans trend without worrying if it's worth the investment. They cost as much as a casual dinner out, so there'll be zero regrets when your credit card statement comes in. Plus, they're almost always on sale, saving you even more money without sacrificing quality.
Despite the low price, these check all the right barrel boxes. They deliver the barrel-like outward curve, but aren't flamboyantly voluminous. The balanced shape isn't intimidating for people trying the trend for the first time, and the high-waisted, ankle-length design keeps the laidback look you're going for. You can also buy them in full-length, with several familiar color options. I adore the leg seams that are situated toward the front of the pants because they make these look high-end, even though they're a budget pick.

Feedback from our tester, Brittany Brainard, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor
“I was really surprised with how much I like these. The denim has just enough stretch that they don't feel restrictive while still holding their signature shape. The seaming and side panels are what really did it for me though, the details are what make this pair a knockout and not just another pair of jeans. Barrel jeans can be tricky sizing-wise, but not these. I'm consistently a 4 at Old Navy and most other brands, but to be sure I tried on a 2, 4, and 6. The 4 sat perfectly at my waist with no gap, but if I wanted a slouchier, more exaggerated look, I might size up to the 6 (I got the 2 on, but the waist was definitely tight). I'm 5 '7 ", and the ankle length hit well above my ankle bone; perfect for a cropped, summer jean. Old Navy had a sale going on, so these rang up as $30—how could I go wrong?”—Brittany, Senior Editor
How We Found the Best Barrel Jeans
Since all of our favorite brands have their own amazing and different versions of a barrel jean these days, it can be a struggle to pinpoint which barrel jeans are the best of the best. That’s why we let our multi-factor algorithm narrow down the list, sifting through top retailers to find the jeans that have great customer ratings, their own social media presence, best-selling status, and credible editorial reviews. After it crunches the numbers, our fashion editors give each product a thorough deep dive, making sure that these are the jeans you need to know about and that our team stands behind.
The best way to do this, of course, is to put a few of the standout pairs on. Our editorial team headed to the stores (and their own closets) to share some of their thoughts on their personal top picks. While this doesn’t affect the score, if you’re anything like me, seeing a real person wearing the jeans gives a truer picture than seeing it on the rack.
What Are Barrel Jeans (And How Are They Different From Wide-Leg)?
What are barrel jeans exactly? Are they the same as mom jeans or boyfriend jeans? How do barrel leg vs. wide leg differ? With so many jean fits, it can be hard to keep it straight, but barrel jeans are their own thing. You may also see them referred to by other names, like "balloon" jeans or "horseshoe" jeans.
Unlike mom jeans, these have more volume around the middle of the leg, with a fitted waist, tailored ankles, and a balloon-like shape from the bottom of the hip to the lower calves. Slimmer barrel jeans can resemble mom jeans, so keep that in mind.
Concerning boyfriend jeans, those don't taper in at the ankles and aren’t as fitted at the waist; they’re loose and relaxed throughout. And wide-leg jeans take that a step further, getting wider and wider as you move down the leg, never tapering back in.
Peter Martinez, a fashion designer and stylist at the Leather Skin Shop, explains that barrel jeans tell a story about architecture, "What makes them unique isn't the trend tag, it's the curved, tapered leg that creates a silhouette flat-front denim simply can't."
He notes: "Barrel jeans are what happens when the wide-leg trend grows up." We were all more than ready to leave the skin-tight denim in the 2000s and early 2010s, giving way to the love for wide-leg silhouettes and baggy styles. Now, we're looking for more tailoring and more intention, without swinging all the way back to the skinny jeans. Barrel jeans fit the bill.
How Are Barrel Jeans Supposed to Fit?
Finding your dream barrel jeans starts with understanding how they should fall on your body. Barrel leg jeans are supposed to fit snugly around the waist. Then, they flare out starting at the hip, getting wider as they move toward the knee, and then tapering back in for a tailored ankle.
Many barrel styles run large, which can make for laidback looks, but it's common for people to size down for a more defined fit. If you're shorter, a high-rise will help elongate the appearance so it doesn't look awkward. On the other end of the spectrum, the best barrel jeans for tall women have a low or mid-rise design that ensures the balloon silhouette is still recognizable.
An important part of the look, of course, is the rounded shape, which means you need a structured fabric. The more rigid and stiff the denim, the better the curved silhouette will hold up. Look for fabrics with higher cotton counts that won't be too relaxed or baggy if you want the true barrel shape. However, no one can come between me and my stretchy denim. If you share that sentiment, you can opt for spandex or elastane stretch barrel jeans, but the barrel shape likely won't be as bold.
How Long Should They Be?
Understanding how long barrel jeans should be will help you choose the ideal inseam. While you can buy full-length barrel jeans for fall and winter, the silhouette is supposed to stop around your ankle, leaving a couple of inches between your foot and the ankle hem.
The pants should end precisely at the skinniest part of your ankle to really accentuate the curved design. This holds true even for cuffed styles. Note that full-length barrel jeans won't look as crisp or tailored, but do offer a level of drama that I'm here for.
The Best Barrel Jeans for Your Body Type
Here's where many people get stuck. They think barrel jeans can only work for tall, leggy ladies. Martinez rebukes this idea, explaining, "Barrel jeans are far more democratic than people assume. The curved leg actually flatters fuller thighs and balances a narrower frame."
However, certain barrel jean styles will work better on different body types. Due to the fitted waist, wide legs, and tapered ankle, getting the proportions perfect is the key. The length and thickness of your legs will be the determining factors.
For example, petite women or those with shorter legs will benefit from cropped barrel jeans that fall at the top of the ankle, giving the illusion of height. Petite ladies should also go with the slimmer styles, like the Madewell jeans we selected. A little volume goes a long way on shorter legs, so no need for an exaggerated balloon shape.
Curvy women need to focus on that snug waist and roomy hips. If the fit around the hip and thighs is too tight, you lose the barrel figure completely. Go for styles with a dramatic barrel shape around the thighs and a well-fitted waist so you still get that rounded shape. The Abercrombie & Fitch or Levi's Cinch Barrel Jeans are excellent choices.
Finally, tall women and ladies with an athletic build should embrace that extra volume too, like what you see in the We The Free Good Luck Barrel Jeans. These add ample curves, achieving the barrel shape while also enhancing your figure.
The Bottom Line on Barrel Leg Jeans
The barrel leg silhouette is still in style; if anything, the love for these jeans is growing. They're the hidden gem of jean styles, but they're coming into the spotlight as people realize how chic they can be when the fit is spot-on. I know it's easy to see a daring trend like this and think, "There's no way I can pull that off." But trust me, barrel jeans are more forgiving and flattering than they get credit for. Every time you swap out a more familiar silhouette for barrel jeans, you'll feel and look more sumptuous and sophisticated.
