Why we love it:
Never ever underestimate what the drugstore makeup aisle has to offer. This lip plumping gloss from Maybelline is one of our top picks, raising the bar when it comes to the comfort of plumping products. This is formulated with hyaluronic acid and a non-sticky finish, hydrating your lips and making it easy to wear for hours. You’re getting the cream of the crop at a staggeringly low price, so don’t let anyone tell you that Sephora is the only place for next-level lip plumpers.
The high shine never lets you down, and the range of sumptuous colors means you can stock up on a range of looks. For those just dipping their lips into the plumping world for the first time, I recommend starting with this low-tingle product. Your lips won’t feel fiery, but you’ll get that extra volume you’re looking for.

Feedback from our tester, Brittany Brainard, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor
“I’m a little bit obsessed with Maybelline Lip Lifter Gloss. It feels surprisingly light, similar to the Kosas lip oil but slightly thicker. Not sticky at all—I drank a can of soda and didn't feel like my lips were sticking to it or leaving messy gloss marks. I keep trying to decide if I feel anything or not; if there's a tingle it's pretty much undetectable. It has a sweet scent, almost like coconut candy, that lingers longer than other glosses; so if you find scented or flavored products distracting you might want to take note. My lips felt full and moisturized long after the gloss wore off, which seriously took hours.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Why we love it:
Another lip enhancement lip gloss with hyaluronic acid, this Dior gloss redefined what plumpers could be. For a long time, they were a product women would suffer through for the full-lip look, but Dior created this formula for a more soothing experience. It’s also infused with cherry oil (yum) that enhances hydration for a full 24 hours of supple lips.
Thanks to this natural and nourishing formula, the tingle is subtle and not hard to handle at all. It’s thick enough to stay on for hours, but has a silky texture that will make you want to reapply just for the heck of it. A surprising but welcome trait is the sweet aroma with hints of cherries. We all know Dior is a luxury brand, so this price tag isn’t modest, but the top-quality formula makes it well worth the investment.

Why we love it:
Cream formulas are a little different. They offer a more pigmented and milky look compared to traditional glass-like glosses. Don’t worry, you still get some shine, but with way more color and saturation. Plus, the texture is, well, creamy, making it inherently soothing. It mixes peptide complexes with vitamin E and hyaluronic acid filling spheres, simultaneously softening and smoothing lips while delivering that plumping effect.
The tingle is not so subtle here, so if you’re into that sensation (like me), the Buxom cream gloss is a must-try. It has impressive staying power, lasting all day long, and comes in a range of romantic and bold hues. I’m hyped that this made the list because I’m a Buxom lover and I feel it’s a criminally underrated brand.

Oh, e.l.f., you never let a budget girl down. This is the best plumping lip gloss if you’re trying to save money. It’s under $10, but is loaded with clever ingredients that cool, tingle, and titillate your lips. Made with vitamin E to enrich your lip skin and coconut oil to hydrate while soothing irritation, this gloss is easy to wear, even if you’re new to lip plumpers.
It doesn’t just set your lips on fire and walk away. It combines menthol and menthyl lactate, offering a cooling sensation and creamy texture that keep things comfortable. If you’re worried you’ll hate the tingly sensation of plumpers and don’t want to waste money on a product you’ll use once, this is an easy option. Give it a try. You’ll never look back.

Why we love it:
This is among the best-rated lip plumpers for people who want a luxurious gloss that won’t cause serious irritation. It’s made with passion fruit, grapeseed oil, fruit extracts, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid, a blend of ingredients that treat your lips with the love they deserve. These are the kinds of ingredients you usually find in top-quality skincare products, so they’re giving your lips the care you usually reserve for the rest of your face.
Color-wise, this is one of the more understated options. The hues are on the softer side, making it more like a true lip gloss and less like a shiny lipstick. But the formula is buildable, so you can slap on those layers if you want a more pronounced color. Oh and tarte’s plumping lip liner is also a winner if you want to accentuate your lips even more.

Why we love it:
Did you know lip lines were even a thing? Much like the wrinkles around our eyes, mouth, and forehead, now we can also fret about the ones on our lips. It’s hard being a woman. But LAWLESS found the solution and bottled it into a plumping lip gloss. It doesn’t just add volume to your lips, it plumps up those lines to create a more even and luscious appearance by using a peptide complex that triggers collagen production.
Shea butter, rosehip oil, and glycerin have a conditioning effect on your lips, leaving them softer than silk and more plush than a Tempurpedic. The sting from the ginger and capsicum is nothing to write home about, and it’s countered with an added cooling effect for a more comfortable wear.

Feedback from our tester, Brittany Brainard, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor
“I love the mild, cooling tingle with this plumping gloss; I don’t really get much of a warming sensation from it. This one definitely has a thicker formula and is on the stickier side, but completely worth it if you like a super glassy lip. The applicator is large and curved, depositing a lot of product as well. The Cherry Vanilla shade has a lightly fruity scent and taste straight out of the tube that isn’t really noticeable after a minute or two of wearing—apparently the different shades have matching flavors, which is a bonus if you love (or have an aversion to) flavors like strawberry or watermelon.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Why we love it:
This viral lip plumper did the rounds on MakeupTok and Instagram for good reason, earning praise from makeup lovers who want that full-lip look. The first time you put this on, you’ll notice the hot sensation and the softening feel, as it’s made with avocado oil, tocopheryl acetate, tocopherol, and canola oil to ensure your lips are fully conditioned.
The plumping effect happens within a minute or two, so you don’t have to wait to see the results. It’s like watching magic in the mirror. But it’s not a one and done thing. The more you use it, the more hydrated your lips will be in general, offering long-lasting softness and plumpness. I’m dubbing this the best lip plumping gloss for the moments when you need the plump and you need it now. But it’s not for the tingle-fearing folks.

Why we love it:
This is another lip plumper that is looking for more than a one-night-stand. It’s here for that long-term relationship. The Proprietary Collageneer™ formula features lupine seed extract to support collagen production, giving you fuller, more supple lips over time.
It’s also the only gloss here with clinically-backed cumulative results, with 25% of participants saying they noticed plumper lips in two weeks (even without the gloss on). But 93% of users saw that plumpness immediately after application, thanks to the Heat + Ice Technology that makes your lips hot and then cools them down in seconds. It only comes in a few hues, but they’re sultry and elegant, and I’d expect nothing else from Charlotte Tilbury.

Patrick Ta has the best plumping lip gloss if you’re a shine-obsessed gal who also wants beautiful, pillowy lips. It’s among the most luxurious options in both feel and look, with over a dozen colors that range from clear to milky. While it’s never a bad time to plump up your pout, I think this one is luxe enough to be reserved for your fancy nights out and the moments you want to make a statement.

“I felt the warming sensation right off the bat—no wondering if there’s a tingle or not in this one. I could definitely feel it ramping up in intensity for the first minute or two, but it wasn’t uncomfortable or felt like it was burning me. I could see a noticeable difference immediately that stuck around for a while, and the tingle even lingered after I wiped the product off.
The formula is in the middle thickness-wise for a lip gloss, with very little stickiness. I tried one of the sheer shades (2CCs), which was just right for a glossy, natural look, but the ‘rich’ and ‘shimmer’ shades look tempting too.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Why we love it:
Lastly, I want to introduce you to one of my best friends: lip plumping oil. Unlike plumping lip glosses and lip liners, plumping lip oils look and feel a lot more natural. Similar to other formulas, this one is made with hyaluronic acid and other hydrating ingredients—namely a smorgasbord of oil, including primrose oil and avocado oil—working as a skincare product as well as a cosmetic enhancement (no needles needed).
It enriches your skin barrier for healthier-looking lips, all while waking up your lips so they appear fuller and smoother. And for my tingle haters (I get it), this is the best option. It’s a tingle-free formula, so the effects take a little more time to appear, but you won’t have to withstand any funky feelings. Please, for the love of all that is plump, do not sleep on the lip oils!

“If you’re not a thick gloss girlie, this lip oil is for you. It’s light, slippery, and surprisingly pigmented. There’s no noticeable tingle and zero stickiness, you can seriously forget you’re even wearing it. There is a barely-there light scent and flavor, almost like a powdered donut. Since there’s no tingle I didn’t notice a dramatic plumping effect, but my lips did feel really smooth and moisturized even after I wiped the product off. The applicator is noticeably smaller than others, but I felt like I was able to get a more precise application, which was handy with the bold color I tried on.”—Brittany, Senior Editor
How We Found the 10 Best Lip Plumping Glosses
Wondering how we get the inside scoop on the best-of-the-best products? Our editorial team used Rank & Style’s algorithm, which looks through customer reviews, bestseller status, industry recognition, and social media mentions to find and rank the lip plumping glosses that people love and keep coming back to. Then, each of these lip plumpers gets individually reviewed by our editors, looking at ingredient quality and formulation type across gloss, cream, and oil formats. Finally, we dug through our vanities or hit up the sample counter to give you a first-hand review of some of our faves, so you don’t have to.
What Does Lip Plumper Actually Do?
I know lip plumping glosses, oils, and creams can sound too good to be true. They’re not lip fillers, so how could they possibly give you those sexy Angelina Jolie lips? And what does lip plumper do to your skin? As someone who was a skeptic before trying these products, I can assure you that lip plumpers do work, but the way they work depends on the formula.
Shamsa Kanwal, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist with over 10 years of clinical experience, explains the different mechanisms, saying, “Most work by increasing surface blood flow, adding hydration, or creating a glossy effect that makes the lips appear larger.”
Kanwal explains, “Many plumping glosses use mild irritants such as menthol, cinnamon, capsicum, ginger, or peppermint to bring more blood flow to the lips.”
If you fear that fiery effect, no worries. There are also “Others [that] use humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to pull water into the surface layers and soften fine lines,” Kanwal elaborates.
It’s important to understand that the plumping effects, no matter what mechanism the formula uses, are temporary. Some last an hour, while others keep your lips full for a whole day. But you have to use these every day if you want to maintain that lush appearance.
Personally, my favorite formulas combine both circulation and hydration mechanisms. I love that funny tingle feeling on my lips, and I find the warming plumpers have the biggest impact on volume, with capsaicin and ginger formulas being my favorite. However, I take my hyaluronic acid seriously. If I could bathe in it, I’d be one happy, hydrated lady. So whenever I see this ingredient in any formula, I’m on board, especially when it comes to a product that might otherwise dry out my lips.
Does Lip Plumper Burn? What the Tingle Really Means
It can be alarming when you borrow your bestie’s lip gloss or buy a new product and feel like your lips are vibrating. The sensation might be hot, buzzy, tingly, prickly, or chilly. But don’t worry, aside from any specific allergies you might have, they’re completely safe, and that funny sensation is expected. In fact, it’s intended.
Dr. Amy Bandy, a beauty expert and board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, explains, “It's typical for this sensation to occur when circulation increases to the lips. Some lip plumpers may cause irritation or discomfort if used excessively, however … lip plumpers are generally safe for most users when used appropriately.”
What’s in the lip plumper that delivers that burn? The top ingredients used in formulas that cause these sensations are:
- Capsaicin/capsicum (the compound that makes peppers spicy)
- Cinnamon
- Menthol
- Peppermint
- Ginger
- Vanillyl butyl
- Menthol
- Camphor
- Benzyl nicotinate
- Vitamin B3/niacin
Some of these safely and mildly irritate the skin with heat, others create a cooling sensation that can plump. Ones like benzyl nicotinate activate your blood vessels through a process called vasodilation, to puff up your lips.
Like I said, I love to feel that burn, so I go for stronger tingle formulas, like the Too Faced and Buxom glosses. But you can opt for a softer sensation with Dior or e.l.f., or avoid the burn altogether with Maybelline or Kosas glosses. I recommend starting with one of the tingle-free or low-tingle formulas first. If you don’t mind the feel or want to explore a stronger sensation and richer appearance, you can graduate to the medium and high-tingle formulas.
People with sensitive skin may have more unpleasant reactions, so use caution when experimenting with the different levels. If the sensation ever moves beyond a warm tingle and into burning or serious swelling, remove the product using water and/or cleanser and stop using it.
How Long Does Lip Plumper Last?
The duration of your lip plumpness depends on the formula, but most last a few hours. I’ve tried ones that wear off after less than an hour, and others that keep the plump going for 8+ hours. But the average time to expect is about four hours. Many deliver immediate results, while others can take 5–10 minutes to reach their maximum plumpness. If you’re trying a new product, I highly suggest you take before and after pictures of the results so you can see the difference with your own eyes.
For the fastest results, go with the high-tingle formulas that plump using those soft irritants. Formulas that focus on hydration will take longer and deliver a more understated difference. However, what really excites me is the long-term plumping formulas that can make your natural lips look fuller, like the LAWLESS and Charlotte Tilbury glosses. These work to boost collagen and hydration through peptide complexes, so your lips will look and feel fuller after every use. In a few weeks, you can go without the gloss for a day and still have luscious lips.
The real secret to plumping lips for longer? Reapplication. If I decide to use a lip plumping gloss on any given day, you can bet that tube is coming with me wherever I go. I typically reapply every two hours or as needed.
Just so you don’t get your hopes too high, understand that lip plumping products will not give you the same volume or longevity as lip fillers. However, you get a fuller look without having to pay a hefty sum or have a needle stuck into your mouth. As someone who will not be embracing the lip filler craze, I’m a major advocate for plumping products. The commitment is low but the payoff is plump.
The Bottom Line on Lip Plumpers
I’ve had “friends” tell me and my thin lips should go get lip fillers. First of all, rude. Second of all, I don’t want to shell out hundreds of dollars, sit in a doctor’s office, and deal with the terror of a needle being stuck into my literal face. That doesn’t mean I don’t love that pouty look. These lip plumping products offer the perfect compromise, giving fuller lips without the hassle and expense of lip fillers (or the risk of unflattering results).
Don’t buy into the filler propaganda. Lips don’t need to be fat to be beautiful, but when you want a little extra plump, these glosses have got you covered.
