Where Red, Blue, And Near-Infrared Light Meet Real Results For Your Best Skin Yet

I get the skepticism. When they first started getting popular, I thought light therapy masks looked a little like something out of a sci-fi movie, and when they started popping up all over my feed, my first thought wasn't "sign me up," but "does this actually do anything, or is it a very expensive nightlight?" It's a fair question, and I doubt I’m the only one thinking it, especially when a good mask can run you at least several hundred dollars.

Fast forward to now, and research around light therapy, particularly red and blue light, has shown that there is real evidence to how these masks can improve the look and feel of your skin when used consistently, and even dermatologists are getting behind it and increasingly recommending them. I'll admit a couple of these are on my own beauty wish list right now, partly because I want to see the science at work for myself.

To gather up the best ones to consider, the Rank & Style algorithm helped me narrow down the best light therapy masks on the market, so whether you're battling fine lines, breakouts, or just ready to add the latest beauty tech to your everyday routine there’s an option on this list that’s just what you’re looking for.

All products and deals are sourced by the Rank & Style team using data and expert insights. If you shop through our links, we may earn a commission—at no extra cost to you.

Why we love it

This is the mask I'd point almost anyone to first, and it's easy to see why it's basically the category benchmark. Dr. Dennis Gross has been a dermatologist for over 25 years, and that experience shows in how thoughtfully this device is built. You get red light for collagen and fine lines, blue light for clearing up pimples, or use both wavelengths together if your skin tends to multitask its problems the way mine does.

The biggest perk is that you get the full benefits in only three minutes. The short session time means it’s easy to slot into literally any routine, which matters because like most things in skincare, consistency is key. It's FDA-cleared, it's FSA/HSA eligible so you can put pre-tax dollars toward it, and the adjustable strap is well designed so it sits comfortably against your face rather than digging in.

Savings tip: Dr. Dennis Gross products (including this mask) are readily available at Nordstrom, and sometimes even include a gift with purchase. Even without a sales event, you can still get a deal if you use a Nordstrom coupon during checkout.

Why we love it

If bright lights near your eyes make you a little uneasy, this is the mask to know about. CurrentBody built in pop-in eye inserts that function almost like swim goggles, blocking the brightness without blocking the treatment underneath, which is a smart design choice that eases a lot of the hesitation first-time buyers have.

This is also the one to know about if you're comparing it to the original CurrentBody mask (which is still a great option), because Series 2 is a genuine upgrade, not just a repackage. It adds a third wavelength, deep near-infrared at 1072nm, on top of the red and near-infrared light the first version offered, and that deeper wavelength is designed to penetrate roughly twice as far, which matters for anyone targeting more stubborn lines or loss of firmness. The LED count nearly doubled too, so you get an even distribution across your face. For anyone chasing deeper anti-aging results, or already sold on Series 1 and wondering if the upgrade is worth it, this is the answer.

Feedback from our tester, Anna

“I’ve been a true fan of the CurrentBody LED Mask since 2024, and it has become one of the few skincare devices I actually use consistently. After regular use, I’ve noticed that my skin looks much more even, and it definitely feels firmer. My complexion has a healthier glow, and I feel like my overall skin quality has improved. After months of consistent use I can genuinely see the difference. It’s easy to fit into my routine, and for me it has absolutely been worth the investment.”—Anna

Your skincare routine doesn’t have to get put on hold when you travel. The Omnilux Contour Face comes with universal voltage and four country-specific plug adapters right in the box, along with its own carry bag, so your routine can stay consistent whether you're at a hotel or crashing at a relative's house for the holidays. No adapter scrambling, no skipped weeks.

Beyond the travel perks, this mask carries serious clinical credibility. Omnilux Medical technology has been around for nearly two decades, and is backed by dozens of peer-reviewed studies supporting its red and near-infrared wavelengths for reducing fine lines, improving tone, and calming redness. The mask itself is a soft silicone designed to mold to the face rather than sit stiffly the way some hardshelled options do, and the ten-minute auto-shutoff sessions are built to fold easily into a nightly routine, at home or away.

Why we love it

I love a multi-purpose product, especially when it adds to the skincare ritual experience, which is why I think the Shark CryoGlow has such appeal. It cools the skin under your eyes, for a depuffing effect like when you chill your undereye creams and patches (if you haven’t tried this, here’s your sign), but more targeted with three different levels of cooling, so you can adjust the temperature depending on what feels good to you. This bonus feature makes it the obvious pick for anyone dealing with puffiness, tired mornings, or skin that just runs a little inflamed and irritated.

Besides the cooling feature, this mask has light therapy credentials that make it worthwhile too. It covers both red and blue light therapy as well as infrared, and has treatment times and modes backed by real clinical studies, so you know what results to expect.

Savings tip: If you shop at Ulta, you get to choose from three color options for this mask and you can likely get a bonus discount if you shop with an Ulta Beauty coupon.

Why we love it

Not everyone wants to spend $600 to find out if they even like using a light therapy mask, and that's exactly the gap Skin Gym fills. It gives you the full spread, red, blue, and near-infrared light, at a price that sits comfortably under most of the premium options on this list, without skipping the wavelengths that matter.

What makes this a seriously good starter mask rather than just a cheaper one is that it doesn't ask you to compromise on versatility. You're not locked into a single wavelength or a single skin concern; you get the same core technology as the pricier picks, just without some of the extras like app connectivity or built-in eye protection. I think this is a solid pick if you're just dipping your toes in light therapy and want to see how an LED mask fits in your skincare routine before you commit to an investment mask.

Every category needs a mask that lets you dip a toe in without a big financial commitment, and this is it. The Lumamask Pro comes in well under every other mask on this list while still offering three wavelengths, red, blue, and infrared, plus two dedicated treatment modes for acne and aging.

I won't pretend this is going to out-perform a $700 device with hundreds more LEDs, and I don't think it's trying to. What it does well is make the category accessible, because the best light therapy mask is the one you use, and price can be one of the biggest barriers standing between someone getting their hands on one. It’s not as fast as others, with a twelve-minute auto-shutoff timer, but it’s FDA-cleared and it covers the basics enough that it’s a low-commitment mask to start your light therapy journey with.

Why we love it

Most of the masks on this list are built to tackle a little bit of everything, like fine lines, tone, and blemishes all at once, but the Omnilux Clear is refreshingly specific. It's engineered for breakout-prone skin, combining blue light to focus on acne-causing bacteria with red light to calm the inflammation and redness that breakouts leave behind, making it a must-have if your needs lean more skin-clearing than anti-aging.

That specificity is exactly why it earns its spot here, and it's worth noting this isn't the same device as the Omnilux Contour Face mentioned earlier on this list. That one leans into anti-aging; this one is built around clearer skin. If your primary concern is breakouts rather than fine lines, I'd steer you toward this mask specifically.

Therabody built its name on recovery tech, (think percussive massage guns and vibration therapy) so it makes sense that its foray into light therapy wouldn't just be a plain LED mask. The TheraFace Mask layers in vibration therapy to help relax face and scalp muscles, making this an ideal ritual for relaxing before bed, or even releasing tension in the AM if you tend to clench your jaw at night.

It also comes with removable eye protection which is another perk that often gets overlooked, and 648 LEDs for evenly distributed coverage similar to other premium picks on this list.

If fine lines and loss of firmness are your primary concern, this is the most purpose-built option on the list. Solawave packed in 320 LEDs across four separate wavelengths, red, deep red, near-infrared, and amber, which is more wavelength variety than almost anything else here, all in service of one goal: visibly softer lines and firmer-looking skin.

The amber wavelength is a unique option and something to consider if skin brightening and evening out tone are on your to-do list, and reviewers say they can see improvements with dull skin with continued use.

Sitting perfectly still, even just for a few minutes, isn't realistic for everyone, and this is the mask that gets it. The FAQ 202 ditches the attached controller cord entirely, running fully wireless for up to 90 to 100 minutes per charge, and its open-eye, transparent silicone design means you can actually see what you're doing during a session, enough that you can work, clean the kitchen, or watch your favorite show unobstructed.

With eight LED wavelengths to choose from and customizable five to fifteen-minute sessions controlled through the app, this is the mask I'd recommend to anyone who wants to fold light therapy into an already busy routine, answering emails, prepping dinner, whatever, rather than treating it as a dedicated block of downtime.

How We Found the Best Light Therapy Masks

Since so many brands have entered the light therapy space over the past few years, narrowing down the best options took more than just scrolling reviews. The Rank & Style algorithm sifted through top retailers to identify masks with strong customer ratings, bestseller status, social buzz, and credible editorial mentions. From there, our editorial team cross-checked FDA clearance, wavelength claims, and safety features against brand and clinical data, making sure this list spans price points and skin concerns rather than skewing toward luxury-only picks. We also consulted board-certified dermatologists to help ground our criteria in what the research actually supports, not just what a brand claims on its packaging.

Do Light Therapy Masks Actually Work?

I think it’s completely reasonable to ask, although everyone I know who uses one says that the results speak for themselves. The short answer: yes, but you need to have realistic expectations.

As Shamsa Kanwal, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist with over 10 years of clinical experience, puts it: "The strongest at-home applications are modest improvement in fine lines, texture, and overall skin quality with red or near-infrared light, and improvement in mild to moderate inflammatory acne with blue and red light. Results require consistency and are generally gradual rather than dramatic."

That last part is crucial. A light therapy mask for face use isn't a one-and-done miracle treatment; it's a cumulative one. Most people won't see dramatic overnight changes, but with consistent use over several weeks, the improvements in tone, texture, and fine lines become more apparent.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe for Your Eyes?

Eye protection red light therapy questions come up a lot, particularly with anyone just starting out with light therapy, and understandably so. What’s important to know is that FDA-cleared masks are tested against eye-safety standards, so they are safe to use per the brand’s instructions, and many come with either built-in eye protection or separate shields or goggles for extra peace of mind.

Marisa Ponzo, M.D., a double board-certified dermatologist at North York Dermatology Clinic gives weight to this: "Eye protection is something I take seriously with LED masks, particularly when blue light is involved." Her advice is straightforward: "My practical advice is simple: don't stare directly into the LEDs, keep your eyes closed during treatment, and use the eye protection supplied or recommended by the manufacturer—particularly with blue-light devices."

One quick clarification (because both carry safety concerns): a light therapy mask is not a UV mask. LED masks use visible red, blue, and near-infrared wavelengths, not ultraviolet light, so they don't carry the same risks associated with UV exposure like tanning beds.

As for led face mask side effects, most people tolerate these devices well; mild, temporary redness immediately after use is the most commonly reported reaction, and it typically fades within an hour.

What Do the Different LED Light Colors Actually Do?

Anymore, it’s not uncommon to see masks advertising five, seven, even eight LED light therapy colors, and it's easy to assume more is automatically better. Dr. Ponzo puts it plainly: "The most important thing to understand is that different wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths and interact with different cellular targets. More colors don't necessarily mean more benefit."

Dr. Kanwal breaks this down further: "Red light, commonly around 630 to 660 nm, is best studied for reducing inflammation and supporting collagen-related skin rejuvenation. Near-infrared light penetrates more deeply and is used alongside red light for repair and photoaging, while blue light around 415 nm targets acne-associated bacteria and can help inflammatory acne." As for the rest of the rainbow, including green led light therapy, she notes: "Green, yellow, and other colors may have interesting early data for concerns such as pigmentation or redness, but the evidence is much less established. I would not choose a mask simply because it advertises seven colors.”

In practical terms: if fine lines and firmness are your priority, look for red and near-infrared. If breakouts are the main concern, blue light paired with red is your best bet. The extra colors can be a nice bonus, but they shouldn't be the deciding factor in which mask you buy.

How to Clean and Care for Your LED Mask

I know, I know, no one really wants to talk about cleaning, but it matters, especially since these masks sit directly against your skin. Most silicone LED masks should be wiped down with a damp, soft cloth or a brand-specific silicone cleaning spray after each use to remove oil, sweat, and any leftover skincare product residue. This should be obvious since it's an electronic, but never submerge the device in water, and always make sure it's unplugged or fully powered off before cleaning.

For storage, keep your mask in its included carry bag/case or on an included stand in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight, which helps protect both the silicone and the LEDs over time. A quick wipe-down after every session takes maybe fifteen seconds, but it goes a long way toward keeping the mask hygienic and looking and functioning like brand new for years.

Finding Your Best Light Therapy Mask

While I wouldn’t say there’s one definitively "best" light therapy mask out there, there really is a pool of great options, and finding the right one really comes down to your budget, your main skin concern, and how much hands-free flexibility you actually want.

If you're still narrowing things down, start with your top concern, aging, acne, or puffiness, and let that guide you toward the right wavelength/color combination. From there, consider your budget, and finally, see if there are any bonus perks that you would truly use and would make your routine more worthwhile.

And if you're building out a full at-home skincare product lineup, keep an eye out for our upcoming guide to the best anti-aging serums to pair with your light therapy routine.
