I don’t know about you but I can spend way too long standing in the shampoo aisle staring at all those brands and bottles. And I’ll be honest, I used to feel a little embarrassed grabbing shampoo from the drugstore. As if spending $7 on shampoo somehow meant I wasn't taking my haircare seriously enough. Then I went down the rabbit holes on shampoo ingredients and started paying more attention to what was in those bottles, and learned some interesting things.
The assumption that spending more means better hair? A myth. You can easily find affordable shampoos that include hyaluronic acid, argan oil, keratin, and rice milk—ingredients that you used to only get in fancy, $40 salon brands.
Some of the best shampoos I've come across are sitting right there in that drugstore aisle. And this list is proof of that. We put thousands of consumer reviews, bestseller rankings, and editorial picks through the Rank & Style algorithm to find the 10 best drugstore shampoos. Your best hair day does not require a salon price tag.
All products and deals are sourced by the Rank & Style team using data and expert insights. If you shop through our links, we may earn a commission—at no extra cost to you.

This earns the number one spot because it has a nourishing formula that works for almost everyone. Rose hips are one of the more underrated ingredients in hair care. They're loaded with antioxidants and fatty acids that smooth the hair cuticle and add shine. This formula pairs rose hips with vitamin E and jojoba extract (which mimics the scalp's natural oils to nourish without any greasy residue) for a combo that conditions, smooths, and reduces frizz without weighing hair down.
The scent of this shampoo is just incredible. It’s fresh and floral and it leaves your hair smelling amazing. The lather is good too, so a small amount goes a long way. It's silicone-free, mineral-oil-free, color-safe, and pH-balanced, which makes it a perfect everyday option for all hair types, whether you’ve got fine, straight, colored, or oily hair.
We also love that you can find it in a pump bottle which is nice and easy to use in the shower and you don’t have to worry about accidentally squeezing too much out.

“This is just the right amount of moisturizing for my hair; it feels really sleek afterward, but not heavy or oily from the hydrating ingredients. The scent is sweet, lightly floral, a little fruity; not a cloying, perfumey rose scent. I love that it lathers well, too.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Hyaluronic acid crossed over from skincare into hair care a few years ago, and L'Oreal was one of the first mass-market brands to actually do it properly. This shampoo pulls in moisture and claims to keep hair hydrated for up to 72 hours (when used with the full Elvive Hyaluron + Plump system). But even when you use it as a standalone shampoo, the difference is noticeable for dry hair.
It's a cream formula but it’s lightweight enough that it won't weigh down fine hair, which is a common problem with moisturizing shampoos. The scent is really nice, too, with notes of berries, cherry blossom, vanilla, and sandalwood. And it’s paraben-free, which is always a bonus. If your hair always feels dry and thirsty no matter how many products you try, this is a good one to start with.

Let's address the stigma around dandruff shampoo because it's undeserved. This isn't a niche product for a niche problem. It's a scalp-health essential. And healthy hair starts at the scalp. Head & Shoulders uses pyrithione zinc (ZPT), which is a clinically-proven active ingredient that stops dandruff at its source rather than just treating the symptoms. It tackles flakes, itch, oiliness, dryness, irritation, and build-up all at once, which makes it one of the hardest-working shampoos on this list. And the great thing is that you can find it at literally any drugstore or supermarket.
The formula is effective but it’s also gentle enough for daily use. It's pH-balanced, paraben-free, and it nourishes hair while it cleans. The scent is also light and fresh so it’s very pleasant to use. If your scalp is struggling, this shampoo can help without overcomplicating your routine (or making a big hit on your budget).

“I like to keep a bottle of Head & Shoulders at home for when my scalp needs a refresh. I can get a little flaky now and then, and usually one wash with this shampoo takes care of it. Unlike other dandruff shampoos, the scent doesn’t give any indication that it’s treating anything; it just has a neutral, clean fragrance. I feel like I have a little more volume after using it, too.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

If your hair has been looking a bit limp lately, product buildup might be the culprit. That means it’s time to hit the reset-button with a clarifying shampoo to remove it. The Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Shampoo is technically a purifying shampoo but it gives your hair a deep yet gentle cleanse. It uses vitamin B3 and B6 as well as aloe extract to make sure your hair ends up feeling refreshed and clean but not stripped.
It's also lightweight enough for fine hair (rare for a clarifying formula) and doesn't leave that dry aftermath that some other clarifying shampoos are known for. For anyone in a hard-water area, or anyone who layers a lot of styling products in their hair, this is a great pick.

If you have curly hair, you probably know about SheaMoisture. It’s been a staple brand in the curly and coily hair community for years, and that’s because it works. This formula is full of ingredients that are good for curly hair. Coconut oil and shea butter moisturize and protect while replenishing oils. Hibiscus flower extract improves elasticity, which reduces breakage and split ends. Rosemary and aloe oils add hydration, and silk protein helps to smooth the hair cuticle for better curl definition and a beautiful silky-soft finish. Neem oil rounds it all out by repairing damage and boosting shine.
It's also sulfate-free, which is often a non-negotiable for curly hair. But what we really love is the lather. This shampoo has a rich, creamy lather (rare for a sulfate-free formula) that rinses out cleanly without leaving any heavy residue behind.

Pantene's Pro-V complex is one of the most researched formulas in mass-market hair care. The brand has been investing in serious R&D for decades, and it shows. This particular formula is built around a potent blend of Pro-V nutrients, pro-vitamin B5, protective antioxidants, and pH balancers. These all work together to penetrate the hair shaft and hydrate the hair from the inside out.
The shampoo gives a nutrient-rich lather that removes buildup while priming strands for softness from root to tip. It's color-safe, vegan, free of parabens and colorants, and gentle enough for daily use on chemically-treated or heat-damaged hair. If your hair has been put through it and is feeling brittle, this is the drugstore shampoo to reach for.

“I really love the scent of this shampoo. Right out of the bottle it smells a little apple-like but after lathering and rinsing it smells warmer and a little sweet; it’s definitely not a one-note scent. Even without using conditioner, I was able to run my fingers through my wet hair without snagging, and once dry my hair looked much smoother and glossier. It’s very hydrating—I can skip the conditioner completely with this one.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

If you color your hair and you're still using a regular shampoo with sulfates in it, you're basically paying to watch your hair color fade faster. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are cleansing agents, but that means they can also strip your color out. L'Oreal's EverPure line has built its entire identity around being color-safe and this formula backs that up with a sulfate-free blend infused with rosemary to keep your hair (and its color) going strong.
The lather is also rich and luxurious, and your hair comes out silky and clean. The scent is a blend of musk, bergamot, and cedarwood that isn’t too overpowering but still smells great. It's also vegan, paraben-free, gluten-free, dye-free, mineral-oil-free, and free of harsh salts.

Moisturizing shampoos and fine hair haven’t always been a good combo. Many moisturizing shampoos end up being too heavy and weigh down the hair so it ends up flat. And that's even more of an issue for hair that's naturally thinning or losing density with age. Dove’s Daily Moisture Therapy shampoo doesn’t do that. Its formula works at a molecular level and the Bio-Protein Care technology helps to regenerate hair strength.
It's also infused with hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed soy protein, which smooth and nourish strands without any heaviness. That means you get hair that feels softer and more manageable after the first wash—and you don’t have to sacrifice volume. This shampoo is color-safe, PETA-approved vegan, and gentle so you can use it daily. The scent is mild and clean, it's available absolutely everywhere, and the price makes it a total no-brainer.

“I use heat to style my hair and don’t always get a trim as often as I should, so split ends and damage are typical for my hair. This shampoo made my hair feel really soft all the way to the tips, and it seemed much smoother with fewer flyaways after I dried and styled it. The scent is hard to describe, but it’s less sweet smelling than most that I tried will a mild, complicated scent that reminds me of salon shampoo.”—Brittany, Senior Editor

Argan oil is basically haircare royalty and it has real prestige-product heritage. It's the ingredient that put Moroccanoil in every salon and made "Moroccan oil" a buzzword. OGX delivers that same smoothing power at a fraction of the cost. The lather is luxe and rich, and feels more like you’re using a salon shampoo rather than a $6 bottle. The scent is warm and rich, and it lingers in your hair in the best way as it isn’t too overwhelming.
Users with dry, frizzy, thick, and color-treated hair all really love this one and say it leaves their hair soft and shiny. The anti-frizz effect shows up in just a few washes and doesn’t weigh the hair down. If frizzy hair is your main concern and you've been scrolling past expensive smoothing products wondering whether they're worth it, this is your sign to stop and give this one a try first.

Most mainstream shampoos are formulated with straight or wavy hair in mind, and that's a problem if you have thick, natural, or coily hair. Cantu specifically designed this formula for those hair textures. The shea butter base gives this shampoo a rich, creamy texture that cleanses and moisturizes in the same step. It lathers well for a sulfate-free cream shampoo, rinses clean, and leaves hair soft and easy to detangle.
This shampoo works as a primary wash-day cleanser or you could choose to alternate it with a lighter formula throughout the week. It’s also good at removing heavier product buildup, which is a must if your curl routine involves creams and

How We Found the Best Drugstore Shampoos
Finding the best drugstore shampoo isn't as simple as grabbing whatever's on sale—there are hundreds of options out there, and not all of them tick all the right boxes. That's why we turned to the Rank & Style multi-factor algorithm to do the heavy lifting, scanning top retailers to surface the shampoos with the strongest customer ratings, best-seller status, social buzz, and credible editorial recognition. From there, our editors took a closer look at each pick, evaluating ingredient quality, hair-type fit, and real-world value. From there, our editorial team (myself included) personally tested a few of our favorites, so you can see honest, first-hand results before you commit to a bottle.
How to Choose the Best Drugstore Shampoo for Your Hair Type
The single most useful thing you can do before buying a new shampoo is to get clear on your main hair concern. Is it dryness or damage? Oiliness? Frizz? Breakage and split-ends? Color fading?
Dr. Manu Sehgal, MD and Senior Medical Contributor at Medical Tourism Co., also advises prioritizing your scalp over your hair when choosing a shampoo. Someone with an oily scalp and dry hair who treats the wrong issue will sadly just make things worse. His tip: pay attention to how your scalp feels in the day or two after washing. If it's consistently dry, itchy, or oily, your shampoo isn't keeping things in balance.
So with that in mind, here's a breakdown of what to look for:
- Dry hair: Look for hydrating agents like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, argan oil, or glycerin. These pull in moisture and help the hair shaft stay hydrated.
- Oily hair or scalp: Choose clarifying or balancing formulas. Zinc-based options and apple cider vinegar shampoos work well. Avoid anything heavy with silicones or thick butters as the lead ingredients.
- Fine or thin hair: Lightweight formulas only! A volumizing shampoo is your best friend. Skip the ones that are more creamy or buttery.
- Curly or coily hair: Sulfate-free is a strong recommendation for curly hair. Cream or co-wash formats work well, and you’ll want to look for moisture-forward ingredients (like coconut oil and silk proteins) up near the top of the ingredient list.
- Color-treated hair: A sulfate-free shampoo is also the best choice for dyed or color-treated hair as it’ll help your color last longer than if you were to use one with sulfates. Look for color-safe labeling and avoid any harsh alcohols.
- Damaged hair: Look for protein-rich formulas with keratin, Pro-V complex, or wheat protein. Reparative ingredients like ceramides and biotin are also worth looking for.
One thing I'd add specifically for women over 60: As hair naturally starts to thin and the scalp becomes drier with age, a lightweight hydrating shampoo is almost always the better call over a heavier cream. Something like Dove's moisture formula or Pantene's daily repair version tends to work well as it won’t add weight to already-fine hair so you don’t end up with a flat ‘do.
Do Drugstore Shampoos Actually Work?
Yes, absolutely! As long as you match the formula to your actual hair concern.
The truth is that formulation matters way more than price. Brands like L'Oreal, Pantene, and Dove invest heavily in R&D and use the same active ingredient categories as prestige brands. The crossover is real so it's possible to get drugstore shampoos that work just as well as salon-brands.
Hyaluronic acid, argan oil, ceramides, and keratin are no longer only found in luxury products. You can find them all over the bottles at your local CVS.
Where drugstore shampoos can fall short is their overall formulation refinement and fragrance quality. A higher-end shampoo might use a more nuanced blend of conditioning agents or a cleaner, more complex scent profile. But for most people, that difference isn’t going to be worth that extra $25 to $30 a bottle.
What to Look For in a Drugstore Shampoo? According to Experts
Dr. Eleonora Fedonenko, Dermatologist and Medical Director of Your Laser Skin Care, says: "The most useful ingredient to look for is a surfactant, either sodium lauryl sulfate or the milder sodium laureth sulfate, because these are actual cleansing agents that really do their job at your scalp. Focus on the active ingredient rather than the marketing terms on the front of the bottle."
Sean Gahan, PDO Technical Service Manager and cosmetic chemist with eight years of experience in hair care formulation, adds that the balance between cleansing agents is what separates a good shampoo from a great one.
He says: "Strong cleansers like sodium laureth sulfate are great at removing heavy oils and buildup, but they can leave the hair feeling dry when used on their own. That's why it's helpful to look for gentler supporting surfactants, such as cocamidopropyl betaine, that soften the overall cleansing effect. When these ingredients work together, you get a shampoo that cleans thoroughly without leaving your scalp tight, itchy, or so stripped that it starts producing extra oil to make up for the dryness."
What to Know About Sulfates
I’m sure we’ve all heard the talk about sulfates. At one point, they were the big evil and everyone was avoiding them. However, they are not inherently bad.
Standard shampoos use sulfates (often sodium lauryl sulfate) as their primary cleansing agents because they create a better, more satisfying lather and help to clean effectively. They are perfectly fine and safe to use.
Dr. Fedonenko is clear on this: "Concerns over sulfate-containing products are overstated for the majority of people. In my practice, about 80% of patients asking about sulfate-free shampoos have no clinical reason to switch. Sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate are surfactants, and for a scalp with normal oil production, they rarely cause anything beyond temporary dryness."
That said, she does flag an exception for anyone with seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis. Stripping the scalp of its natural oils can aggravate those conditions. So if you have a diagnosed scalp issue and experience itching or flaking after washing, speak to a dermatologist before making any formula changes.
For color-treated, curly, or chemically-processed hair, sulfate-free formulas are still a strong recommendation, though. Not because sulfates are harmful, but because they can accelerate color fading and strip the natural oils those hair types depend on.
How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer here as it depends on your hair and routine. As a general guide:
- Oily scalp or fine hair: Daily or every other day usually works best. You can sub in a clarifying - shampoo once a week to deal with any buildup.
- Dry, curly, coily, or thick hair: One to two times a week is usually plenty. Frequent washing strips natural oils these hair types genuinely need for hydration and definition.
- Colored hair: Washing less helps to extend color life and using a sulfate-free formula will help, too.
Signs you might be washing too often include dry scalp, increased frizz, or dull color that seems to fade faster than it should. If you’re not washing enough, you may experience persistent buildup, scalp irritation, or limp and greasy roots.
Your ideal frequency sits somewhere between those two.
The Bottom Line on Drugstore Shampoos
The fantastic news is that you truly do not need to spend a lot to have great hair. I've said it before and the data confirms it: drugstore shampoos belong on your shelf, and this list is proof. The best one for you is the formula that matches your actual hair concerns, used consistently enough to let it work. Start with whatever you’re struggling with most (dryness, oiliness, frizz, damage) and go from there.
