What to Wear on a Cruise: Style and Packing Guide

Our Favorite Outfits for Cruising, From Cocktail Dresses to Excursion Essentials

Everyone wants to feel like the belle of the ball while cruising on the high seas. While effortless ocean-chic may be your goal, the truth is that easy, breezy cruise looks take planning. Even though packing your whole closet sounds like the answer for having an outfit for everything from ship deck to port, luggage still needs to fit through security scanners at the cruise terminal. Going too easy and breezy with packing could leave you wildly underdressed—or downright chilly—during some fancier events or off-boat excursions.

Our editors at Rank & Style know the delicate dance of dressing for cruises well. As captains of fashion—and the easy, breezy lifestyle—we've researched trends in cruise ship clothes, dress guides, and efficient travel packing guides to help you chart a course for the best, most stylish cruise experience of your life. Don't start packing until you check out our guide to what to wear on a cruise—complete with daytime cruise outfits, evening attire, theme-night ideas, cocktail dresses, port excursion looks, and climate-specific packing tips. Our shoppable cruise outfits make curating cruise looks feel like smooth sailing. (Image credit: @suburbanstylefiles)

Understanding Cruise Dress Codes

Expectations for cruises vary by cruise line. While family-friendly cruise lines tend to have more relaxed standards, luxury cruises often have dress codes. Time of day also dictates what's in or out on the high seas. During daytime, beachy and sporty clothes are great for staying cool and enjoying activities. However, the mood really shifts once night falls over the ship and the "club" state of mind takes over—with most ship bars and casinos closing between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Evening attire can be smart-casual for dinner on the deck to formal for themed dinners and gala nights.

What Do People Wear on a Cruise?

Our favorite outfits for cruising are versatile. A great swimsuit with a sarong or shirt-dress cover-up lets you explore the whole ship in comfort and style during the day. Meanwhile, a sundress or athleisure set is great for getting off at port for excursions or exploring the local port city. Cruise clothes obviously vary by location and season. For a cool-weather Alaskan or European cruise, you may need pullover jackets and boots for excursions. Meanwhile, Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises free up more luggage space by letting some easy sundresses and linen sets do most of the heavy lifting.

For nights on the ship, smart-casual evening looks that you borrow from part of your work wardrobe are golden. Pack at least one formal outfit for cocktail night. Sheath and slip dresses generally make the best cruise wear cocktail dresses because they're light to pack and easy to wear around the ship. Get more nautical miles out of every piece you pack by taking a cruise capsule wardrobe approach. A travel capsule wardrobe allows you to mix and match basics and "standout" pieces in different configurations to get a full week's worth of looks with just six to 10 core pieces.

Cruise Attire for Women: From Day to Night

Rompers, dresses, and lightweight jackets are our favorite mix-and-match pieces that transition easily for cruise living. Pack a lightweight shawl/wrap, cardigan, or light blazer jacket for layering for temperature shifts. While you'll get the most versatility and mix-and-match magic from neutrals like tan, olive, and navy blue, there's room for splashy floral prints on tropical cruises.

Cruise Wear Cocktail Dresses & Formal Nights

The formal night is what most people look forward to when planning a cruise. If you plan to attend a themed gala or dinner, you'll need to play by the dress-code rules of the ship—luckily a dressier dress code means cocktail attire instead of full-on ball gown. If you see "cocktail attire" listed, plan for midi, knee-length, or elevated sheath cruise wear cocktail dresses in rich, glitzy fabrics paired with heels or fancier flats.

You now have a grasp of the basics of what to wear on a cruise. Next, it's time to explore outfits for a cruise vacation by itinerary.

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Daytime cruise looks are easy, breezy, and effortless. Sundresses, lightweight peasant dresses with sleeves, and rompers look polished and vacation-ready. Tanks with shorts and wrap skirts also fit the play-all-day cruise aesthetic. Cruise etiquette 101 is that swimwear isn't allowed in dining rooms—but you can take a transitional approach by slipping on a flowy dress as a cover-up.

Picking breathable fabrics and clothing is important because you'll be able to wear pieces all day without sweating through—and burning through your curated suitcase faster. We like linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking fabrics that pack well and feel light. (Image credit: @cheapchicfinds)

Evening Cruise Outfits for Dinner & Entertainment

“Smart casual” is the way to go with cruising outfits for a dinner or a show—dressier than your day look, but not formal attire either. Bring out the elevated sundresses, jumpsuits, and maxi dresses—solids, patterns, and even sequins are welcome. Try nice sandals and some add some bling with gold or sparkly necklaces or earrings to finish off the look.

For those nighttime sea breezes, tote along a lightweight blazer, shawl, or cardigan to layer. We personally love a white blazer on a cruise for a fresh, preppy nautical look. Remember that the goal here is to go dressier than daytime attire without looking like you're going to prom—cute and affordable cocktail dresses or a coordinated set are perfect. Gala Night Cruise Attire

What do you wear if your cruise has a gala night? The same cocktail dress you pack for regular "evenings out" while cruising is fine—that's your favorite slip dress, sheath dress, or midi dress. Gala attire can also mean black tie attire and floor-length gowns. Have a fashion moment with a cocktail dress with sleeves that's somewhere between ball gown and cocktail. For men, cruise galas often require suits or tuxedos. With professional photos available for order at these events, you won't regret dressing to the nines. (Image credit: @suburbanstylefiles)

Theme Night Cruise Outfits

Theme nights are where cruise fashion gets fun—and a little theatrical. Most cruise lines host at least one themed evening during longer voyages, with white parties, tropical nights, and retro nights being the most popular. The key to nailing theme night looks is choosing versatile pieces that work beyond just the party itself.

For white parties, pack pieces from our White Dresses collection, or try a crisp white jumpsuit or flowy white maxi dress works beautifully and can double as elegant evening wear on other nights. Tropical nights call for bold florals, bright colors, and playful prints that capture that island vibe. A vibrant wrap dress or tropical print romper fits the bill while staying practical for the ship's climate-controlled interior.

Before you pack, check your cruise itinerary to see what theme nights are planned. This way, you can strategically pack a couple of statement outfits that serve double duty—like a retro-inspired midi dress that works for both '70s night and regular evening dining. Remember, participation is optional, but theme nights often provide some of the most memorable photo opportunities of your trip. (Image credit: @sazan)

Port Day Outfits for Excursions

For daytime excursions from the cruise port, stay comfortable in activewear. We like moisture-wicking workout sets that are easy to pack—and thin enough to wash and dry in your cruise cabin—for things like rainforest hiking, hopping on a zipline, or shopping at local markets in hot climates. Pack a lightweight waterproof bag large enough to hold any hiking essentials. Sneakers and an oversized hat are also essential. When heading to the beach, a swimsuit and trendy cover-up work great—just check out our recent round up of Trending Cover-Ups to put together the perfect beach resort look. Embarkation Day Travel Outfit

Your arrival outfit has to be comfy enough to endure traveling, waiting in boarding lines, and exploring the ship—while also being cute enough to wear during travel and first-day ship photos. Since your luggage may take some time to arrive at your cabin, you could be stuck in this outfit for a bit. Our list of Cozy-Chic Activewear Finds is full of soft, flexible pieces.

Make your debut on the cruise in comfort and style with travel outfits like a breathable jumpsuit or maxi dress with a light jacket or cardigan. A cute lounge set with crisp sneakers is another fun option. A crossbody bag that keeps your phone, passport and ID, cruise documents, and sunscreen close to your body is also essential. Choose comfortable flats and slip-on sneakers. As you jet from the different climates of airports, terminals, the ship deck, and the ship interior, layerable pieces ensure comfort. What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise

Sailing the Mediterranean means balancing your desire for comfort with meshing with fashionable cities like Rome, Barcelona, and Santorini. The right looks for this type of trip include lightweight dresses, linen pants, chic sandals, comfortable walking sandals for navigating old stairs and cobblestones, and subtle accessories. Anything in our rundown of Dresses at Anthropologie will be chic enough for Mediterranean cities. A large hat, black sunglasses, and stylish crossbody bag or fanny-style bag finish out the look for the perfect blend of Euro style and practicality. (Image credit: @aclaireytale)

What to Wear on a Cool Climate Cruise

When heading into chilly waters—think once-in-a-lifetime cruises to Alaska, Northern Europe, or British Columbia—layering prevents suitcase overstuffing. When divvying up room in your luggage for excursions like whale watching or hiking snowcapped hills, prioritize sweaters, thermal layers, waterproof jackets, and boots because you may not be able to attend some excursions without them. If your chilly cruise is more urban in nature—like sightseeing in Amsterdam—use luggage space for tall, soft boots and a polished peacoat for stylish European travel outfits that are warm enough. Cozy matching sweats and fleece-lined leggings are perfect for ship lounging as you sail on chillier, choppier waters with moody skies. (Image credit: @suburbanstylefiles)

Shoes to Wear on a Cruise

The R&S team generally implements a four-pair rule when packing for cruises. One to two pairs for daily wear, one showstopper pair for evenings, and one excursion pair. Remember that shoes take up more room and add more weight than anything else you'll wear on the cruise. Pack neutral, goes-with-anything colors for added versatility.

Here's some help for weeding out what to pack versus what to leave home:

Daytime and ship exploring: Comfortable sandals, trendy espadrilles, or slip-on sneakers you can wear with dresses; prioritize no-slip soles for slippery cruise decks

Evenings and gala nights: Wedges, block heels, or dressy flats

Pool and beach days: Flip-flops or water sandals

Excursions and active days: Sneakers or waterproof hiking sandals with good support for outdoor excursions; for port cities, do stylish walking heels

Practical and Stylish Cruising Accessories

Versatile accessories can turn two or three outfits into eight or nine outfits. Style, practicality, and sun protection are all in the mix when packing accessories for your cruise clothes.

Here's our default packing list:

Core accessories: Oversized sun hats or visors, sunglasses, scarves, belts, jewelry—and a smartwatch that will get you to excursion meeting points on time.

Practical packing: For ready-to-go looks with no prep, use packing cubes and wrinkle-release spray. Consider travel-friendly perfume, efficient makeup palettes, and hair accessories that double as bracelets. Pack beauty products in TSA-approved toiletry bags to avoid having to part with them.

Bags: Crossbody bags are perfect for cruising because you'll keep your ID and travel docs close to your body.

How to Score a Deal on Cruising Attire

Smart cruise shopping starts with shopping your own closet first—you probably already own versatile pieces that can transition from land to sea. Focus on filling gaps rather than buying an entirely new wardrobe, and prioritize quality basics that you'll wear long after your cruise ends.

When it's time to shop, these brands consistently deliver on cruise-worthy style without breaking the bank:

  • J.Crew and Uniqlo excel at timeless basics like linen pants, cotton dresses, and lightweight cardigans that form the foundation of any cruise capsule wardrobe. Shop with J.Crew coupons and UNIQLO promo codes for the best deals.
  • Lands' End and Tuckernuck offer preppy, nautical-inspired pieces perfect for that classic cruise aesthetic—think striped tops, sailboat-print dresses, and polished resort wear. Save with codes at Tuckernuck for elevated resort pieces.
  • Rothy's specializes in comfortable, packable shoes made from sustainable materials that are perfect for cruise travel. Look for Rothy's discount codes to save on their machine-washable flats and sneakers that transition seamlessly from ship deck to shore.
  • Athleta delivers high-quality activewear that works beautifully for excursions and ship fitness activities. Check for promotions at Athleta to save on performance pieces that pack light and move with you from yoga class to hiking adventures.
  • Anthropologie brings the elevated bohemian pieces perfect for those Instagram-worthy cruise moments—flowy maxi dresses, statement jewelry, and chic cover-ups that photograph beautifully. Check for Anthropologie promo codes before shopping their cruise-worthy collections.

How to Plan Your Cruise Vacation Wardrobe

Start shopping at least a month out in case outfit staples you order have shipping or out-of-stock delays. We advise shopping after booking because there's a good chance you'll be left with more in your cruise wardrobe budget than anticipated if booking the trip with Expedia coupon codes or Booking.com promo codes

Book excursions as close to the time of confirming your cruise reservation as possible to get some activity-based shopping juices flowing—regardless of whether you book excursions directly through your cruise line or using a Viator promo code or Priceline promo code. Zip up your suitcase at least two days before departure to give yourself time for "oops, I forget" epiphanies about its contents.

Your Complete Guide to Cruise Ship Style

From boarding-day looks to cocktail dresses, the right cruise ship clothes will keep you comfortable, confident, and photo-ready at every port of call. Whether you're planning outfits for a cruise vacation in the Mediterranean or packing for Alaska's glacial views, remember that the best cruise attire for women balances style with practicality. Mix and match pieces that transition from day to night, invest in comfy shoes that work for both deck strolling and shore excursions, and don't forget a few accessories that turn simple outfits into cruise-worthy ensembles. With this style guide as your navigator, your vacation wardrobe can sail smoothly into chic territory—and you'll have the photos to prove it.

Questions About Cruise Outfits

Do cruise ships have strict dress codes?

Modern cruise lines have relaxed significantly compared to the formal cruising era of decades past. Family-friendly lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival focus more on comfort and fun, while luxury lines like Celebrity and Princess may maintain slightly elevated standards. Most ships today operate on a "cruise casual" philosophy during the day, with only dinner and evening entertainment requiring smart-casual or formal attire.

How many outfits should I pack for a 7-day cruise?

Plan for one daytime outfit per day (7 total), plus 3-4 evening looks that can be mixed and matched, 1-2 formal outfits for gala nights, 2-3 excursion-specific outfits, and 2-3 swimsuits. With strategic mixing and matching, you can create 10-12 different looks from about 15-18 core pieces. Remember that laundry services are available onboard if you prefer to pack lighter.

Are jeans allowed on cruises?

Yes, jeans are typically welcomed for casual daytime activities and smart-casual evening venues. However, they're generally not appropriate for formal nights or gala dinners. Dark wash, well-fitted jeans paired with a nice blouse and blazer can work for many evening dining rooms, but save your ripped or overly casual denim for port days and daytime ship activities.
